Tuticorin: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated a green hydrogen pilot plant and several development projects at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, on September 5, 2025.
Expanding Port Infrastructure
Alongside the green hydrogen initiative, the Minister laid the foundation stone for multiple projects. These included the port’s tenth container terminal spread over 7.4 hectares, a 110 kV substation, and a 6 MW wind energy project worth ₹59 crore. To mark the occasion, Sonowal also participated in a tree plantation drive at the port campus.
Driving Growth Through Port-led Development
Addressing the gathering, Sonowal said the shipping industry is undergoing significant growth through port-led initiatives. He emphasized that the people of Tamil Nadu are benefiting from various Central Government schemes and urged them to continue supporting ongoing development. The Minister stressed that both the Centre and the State would work together for the welfare of coastal communities and the broader public.
Coastal Community Development Scheme
Highlighting social initiatives, Sonowal drew attention to the Coastal Community Development scheme. The program aims to support communities living in coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, ensuring their livelihoods and well-being remain secure alongside infrastructure growth.
Honoring a Maritime Pioneer
The inauguration coincided with the birth anniversary of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar, known as Kappal Ottiya Thamizhan. He established the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, contributing significantly to India’s maritime self-reliance during the independence movement.
