In a major step towards transparent and efficient governance, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has accelerated the integration of welfare schemes through the Family ID system, ensuring that eligible citizens receive benefits directly and seamlessly.
Under this initiative, multiple central and state government schemes have been consolidated into a single, unified platform, eliminating duplication and ensuring timely delivery of services. Principal Secretary (Planning) Alok Kumar said, “A total of 98 welfare schemes are now linked with the Family ID system, directly benefitting over 15.07 crore residents of Uttar Pradesh. So far, more than 44 lakh citizens have applied through the Family ID portal, enabling accurate and transparent delivery of financial assistance and essential services.”
Family ID: A 12-Digit Gateway to Welfare Schemes
The Family ID is a unique 12-digit number assigned to each household, containing detailed information of all family members. The initiative, inspired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of One Family, One Identity, ensures automatic identification of eligibility for various welfare schemes.
“This approach prevents irregularities, avoids duplication, and ensures that benefits reach the right beneficiaries,” said Alok Kumar.
Ease of Access and Reduction of Bureaucratic Hassle
With the Family ID system in place, citizens no longer need to visit multiple government offices to obtain income, caste, residence, or other certificates. Once a family is registered, all necessary details are available in a centralised database, saving time, money, and effort while improving administrative efficiency.
Special provisions have also been made for families without ration cards, ensuring that they are not excluded from government welfare schemes. The system allows such households to register for Family IDs and access benefits without disruption.
Digital Verification and Aadhaar Integration
All family members must possess Aadhaar numbers, which must be linked to a valid mobile number for OTP-based verification. Citizens can register themselves through an Aadhaar-based login and e-KYC, with family details automatically fetched from the UIDAI database. Physical verification is conducted by lekhpals in urban areas and Gram Panchayat officers in rural regions.
So far, over 19 lakh physical Family ID cards have been distributed, and the ID is also available digitally on DigiLocker. The card is free of cost, with the government bearing an approximate expense of eight rupees per card.
Comprehensive Coverage and Integration with Welfare Schemes
Currently, 98 welfare schemes are linked to the Family ID, including 13 central schemes and 85 state schemes. Of the 15.7 crore citizens registered, 14.7 crore are linked through ration cards and over 1 crore through self-registration. The database has achieved nearly 70% field saturation, with address details at 100%, mobile numbers at 85%, and marital status at 54%.
A five-level technical process ensures seamless integration with welfare schemes, including Aadhaar notification, database digitisation, Aadhaar authentication, creation of a Family ID field on scheme portals, and integration with departmental databases.
Strengthening Social Security and Trust
The Family ID initiative reflects Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of digital, transparent, and accountable governance. By creating a verified and unified database, the system strengthens social security, ensures that benefits reach the rightful beneficiaries, and reinforces trust between the government and citizens.
Through this initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government has effectively simplified welfare delivery, ensuring that every poor citizen, labourer, farmer, woman, senior citizen, and divyang receives their rightful benefits on time.
