The Uttar Pradesh government has taken serious note of rising incidents of indiscipline within the police department, including theft of cartridges, poor maintenance of arms, and officers skipping mandatory parades. In response, Principal Secretary (Home) Mr. Sanjay Prasad (1995-batch IAS officer) has sought accountability from the Director General of Police (DGP), demanding swift and firm action against errant personnel.
Acting promptly, DGP Mr. Prashant Kumar (1990-batch IPS officer) has directed all district police chiefs and commissioners to take strict disciplinary action in such cases. In his official communication, the DGP noted that lack of coordination between officers and subordinates was a major reason behind such lapses and emphasized the need for senior officers to strengthen internal communication and discipline.
The Principal Secretary has also mandated that all police officers and staff, except those on leave or VIP duty, must attend the weekly Friday parade, with biometric attendance ensuring full participation. Post-parade inspections of cleanliness, facilities, transport units, and residential areas in police lines have also been made compulsory.
Expressing concern over malfunctioning weapons, the DGP stressed the importance of regular weapon and cartridge checks. He warned that any faults detected during inspections must lead to strict action against those responsible.
Additionally, the DGP instructed that all duty rosters be monitored closely to prevent biased duty assignments, which can demoralize personnel and hamper performance. Living conditions in police barracks must also be improved to ensure the well-being of the force.
To enhance communication and resolve personnel grievances, the DGP has directed that police superintendents and company commanders must hold monthly conferences with police staff, and similar meetings should be organized at the range level every quarter. These forums will allow officers to voice concerns and ensure timely redressal.
