Prelims Overview: Two Papers, Over 10 Lakh Aspirants

The UPSC CSE Prelims 2025 was conducted in two sessions comprising Paper 1 (General Studies) and Paper 2 (CSAT). Many aspirants found the paper to be lengthy and time-consuming this year.

Despite the challenging nature of the paper, over 10 lakh candidates appeared in the highly competitive examination, vying for just 979 vacancies announced this year.

Mains Examination from August 22

Candidates who have cleared the prelims will now be eligible to appear for the UPSC CSE Mains 2025, scheduled to begin from August 22, 2025, and will continue for five days. The Mains examination is descriptive in nature and plays a crucial role in the final selection process.

Historically, the number of candidates shortlisted for the Mains is about 12–14 times the total number of vacancies. This year’s figure aligns with that trend, with 14,161 candidates selected.
