New Delhi: Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, a distinguished officer of the Indian Navy, superannuated on 31 October 2025 after nearly 40 years of exemplary service. In a solemn tribute to the nation’s martyrs, he laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, New Delhi on 25 October 2025, honouring the supreme sacrifice of India’s brave hearts.
A Stellar Naval Career
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 January 1987, Vice Admiral Pendharkar is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Specialist and an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. Further honing his strategic and operational expertise, he attended the Naval War College, Karanja, and the prestigious Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
During his illustrious career, Vice Admiral Pendharkar spent over 15 years at sea, commanding three frontline warships:
- INS Kora
- INS Shivalik
- INS Viraat (Aircraft Carrier)
Leadership Ashore and Strategic Contributions
Onshore, he held key leadership assignments across naval operations, acquisitions, and personnel management. A strong advocate of #AtmanirbharBharat in defence, he played a pivotal role in conceptualising the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) project, which has become a cornerstone in enhancing India’s maritime security capabilities.
His vision and leadership contributed significantly to modernising the Navy, promoting self-reliance, and strengthening India’s strategic footprint in the maritime domain.
A Legacy of Commitment and Gratitude
As Vice Admiral Pendharkar hauled down the Naval Ensign, he reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to the nation and expressed heartfelt gratitude to his shipmates, whom he described as “the finest men and women in whites.”
