New Delhi: Vikram Singh Malik, a 2012-batch IAS officer from the AGMUT cadre, has been appointed as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) under the Central Staffing Scheme.
His tenure is set for four years, marking a significant move in his civil services career as he transitions to a strategic communications and media governance role at the central level.
Prior Experience: Key Portfolios in Ladakh
Before this central posting, Malik served as Administrative Secretary in the Union Territory of Ladakh, handling several critical departments including:
- Power
- Youth Services & Sports
- Information & Public Relations
On March 6, 2024, he took over as Secretary of the Power and New & Renewable Energy Department, succeeding Ravinder Kumar. During this period, Malik played an instrumental role in infrastructure development, energy planning, and renewable energy integration in the remote region of Ladakh.
New Role: Steering Media & Communication Strategy
In his new assignment at MIB, Malik steps into a key position overseeing:
- Public broadcasting
- Digital media strategies
- Media content regulation
- Policy coordination across communication platforms
Given the fast-evolving nature of India’s media landscape – including the challenges of digital misinformation, content moderation, and broadcast reforms – Malik’s role is expected to carry both strategic and regulatory weight.
“His blend of field-level administrative experience and communication-oriented leadership makes him well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to India’s media governance framework,” said an official familiar with the appointment.
Succession: Taking Over from IRS Officer Subhash Kumar
Malik replaces Subhash Kumar, a 2011-batch officer from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), who served in the same post from May 2021 under the Central Staffing Scheme.
Kumar’s tenure focused on streamlining communication policies and supporting the government’s digital outreach initiatives.
