In a powerful display of women’s empowerment coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, Western Railway has shone a spotlight on its pioneering female mechanics who are expertly handling critical maintenance activities at the Mumbai Central EMU Carshed. This initiative emphasises on a significant shift in the organization, challenging traditional gender roles in heavy-duty engineering and maintenance.
Historically, roles on the shop floor, particularly those concerning the core mechanical and electrical maintenance of trains, were exclusively held by men.
In an exclusive interaction with Indian Masterminds, Vineet Abhishek, Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, highlighted, the past decade has brought a change in the organization operations.
From Desk to Depot: A Shift in the Gender Equation
“The female participation in critical activities has been consistently increasing,” stated Mr. Abhishek.
The Mumbai Central EMU Carshed, a vital unit for the efficient and safe running of the city’s suburban lifeline, now boasts a workforce of approximately 1100, with nearly 10% being female staff. These dedicated women are no longer confined to desk jobs; they are actively undertaking complex tasks essential for train upkeep.
Hands-On with Heavy Engineering
Their work involves ensuring all components of the EMU trains – the very machines that ferry millions of Mumbaikars daily – are within stringent safety parameters. From routine checks to addressing potential issues, their meticulous efforts guarantee that WR’s trains run safely, reliably, and on time.
These female mechanics are actively involved in complex maintenance tasks, including:
- Conducting routine inspections of EMU components
- Diagnosing and resolving technical faults
- Ensuring compliance with strict safety parameters
- Maintaining operational readiness of suburban trains
Their contributions are pivotal in keeping Mumbai’s railway system – often called the lifeline of the city – running smoothly, safely, and on schedule.
Symbolic Empowerment on Vijayadashami
This visibility on Vijayadashami serves as both a celebration and an inspiration, showcasing how Indian Railways is actively creating a more inclusive and equitable work environment, proving that competency, not gender, is the true determinant of success in technical and critical fields. Western Railway is setting a robust example for gender diversity in the transport sector.
