Guwahati: In a major administrative development, the Assam government has extended the tenure of Dr. Ravi Kota (IAS: 1993: Assam-Meghalaya cadre) as the Chief Secretary of Assam for a period of six months beyond his scheduled superannuation on April 30, 2026.
The official notification, issued by the Department of Personnel, stated – “In pursuance of approval of the Government of India, Department of Personnel & Training, New Delhi and in the interest of public service, the services of Dr Ravi Kota, IAS (RR:1993), Chief Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, is extended for a period of 06 (six) months beyond the date of his superannuation, i.e., from 01/05/2026 to 31/10/2026.”
Appointment as Chief Secretary and Responsibilities
Dr Kota assumed office as the 51st Chief Secretary of Assam on January 17, 2024, succeeding Paban Kumar Borthakur, who retired on March 31, 2024. His appointment came despite superseding at least three senior IAS officers, highlighting the state government’s confidence in his leadership abilities.
As Chief Secretary, Dr Kota serves as the overall administrative head of the Assam government and the Secretary to the State Cabinet. Born on April 12, 1966, in Andhra Pradesh, Dr Kota is a gold medalist in Ph.D. Agronomy from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. He also holds M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Agriculture from the Agricultural College, Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh.
Before joining the civil services, he briefly taught Political Science at Hindu College, enhancing his understanding of governance and administrative theory.
