IFS officer Debashish Sharma has taken to social media platform X to share a groundbreaking development—a landmark judgment resulting in three years of rigorous punishment and a Rs. 10,000 fine for an individual arrested just nine months ago in connection with the smuggling of seven Hill Mynas in West Bengal’s Alipurduar.
Accompanying the announcement were pictures shared by Mr. Sharma on Platform X, he wrote, “Where conviction rate is extremely low, particularly in Wildlife smuggling cases across India, in a landmark judgement, 3 Years of rigorous punishment & Rs. 10,000/- fine awarded to accused arrested 9 months back only in smuggling of 7 Hill Myna in Alipurduar, WB.”
Mr. Sharma acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the Buxa Tiger Reserve (East) Division team in arresting and dismantling the bird smuggling racket within the district. The successful prosecution of the case within the short span of nine months reflects the team’s hard work and commitment.
Providing insights into the unique characteristics of the Hill Myna bird, Mr. Sharma highlighted its talkative nature and ability to mimic various sounds, including those of humans. Despite being sought after and kept illegally by many due to its vocal abilities, Mr. Sharma emphasized that trading or keeping this bird at home is a punishable offense. The Hill Myna enjoys legal protection equivalent to that afforded to iconic species like tigers or elephants.
