IAS officer of 2009 batch Shailbala Martin has courted a controversy by tweeting her concern over the disproportionate attention that the alleged ‘flying kiss’ incident is getting. She pointed out at the lack of discussion that is happening on the Manipur issue.
Over the past few days, there has been a huge uproar on the alleged flying kiss incident in the parliament. Several prominent MPs jointly signed a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha Speaker demanding disciplinary action on Wayanad MP, Rahul Gandhi. The opposition had brought in a no-confidence motion in the parliament primarily focused on the on-going conflict in Manipur.
Ms. Martin on 9th August, 2023 tweeted a picture of the signed copy and wrote, “Just imagine how the women of Manipur must have felt?”

This tweet didn’t sit well with many netizens interpreted her tweet to be a sneer to the ministers and the women parliamentarians. Reply to her earlier tweet, she pointed out that she is not just a civil servant but also a sensitive human being, a woman, a citizen and an Indian and that her words were not sarcasm, but the pain and agony of a woman.
