In a significant move reflecting the Madhya Pradesh government’s commitment to welfare, service recognition, and democratic reforms, a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav approved crucial decisions, including substantial financial assistance for a martyr’s family and the introduction of a new bill on direct elections for urban local body leadership.
State Announces Major Assistance for Martyr Inspector’s Family
The cabinet approved financial assistance of Rs. 1 crore for the family of Inspector (Special Armed Forces) Mr. Ashish Sharma of the Hawk Force, Balaghat, who was martyred on November 19, 2025, during a police-Naxal encounter.
In a humanitarian gesture, the government also granted compassionate appointment to his younger brother, Mr. Ankit Sharma, who will join the district police force as a sub-inspector.
Honoring an Exceptional Officer with a Legacy of Bravery
Inspector Mr. Ashish Sharma was known for his exemplary courage and dedication. He was twice awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry and had earlier been honored with the Internal Service Medal in 2021 and the Inaccessible Service Medal in 2023. The state government had also granted him an out-of-service promotion in 2023, marking his exceptional service record.
The cabinet meeting commenced with the singing of Vande Mataram, paying tribute to his sacrifice.
Approval Granted for Direct Election of Urban Body Presidents
In a move aimed at strengthening democratic accountability and enhancing citizen participation, the cabinet approved a bill to be introduced in the Legislative Assembly for restoring the direct election system for presidents of Nagar Palika and Nagar Parishad.
From 1999 to 2014, these positions were filled through direct elections. Although the method was altered in 2022—making elected ward representatives responsible for choosing presidents—the mayoral posts continued to follow the direct voting system. The new bill aims to bring uniformity and revive people-centric electoral processes across urban bodies.
Boosting Grassroots Democracy Through Institutional Reforms
The decision marks a significant step toward deepening urban governance, empowering citizens, and promoting transparency. The move is expected to strengthen administrative accountability and reinforce democratic participation across Madhya Pradesh’s urban local bodies.
