The Uttar Pradesh Eco-Tourism Development Board, chaired by the Chief Secretary, has unveiled plans to transform Dudhwa National Park and Katarnia Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary into major eco-tourism destinations. The initiative aims to attract domestic and international tourists while ensuring sustainable development and conservation of wildlife habitats.
River Safari Capacity to Double at Katarniaghat
To meet growing tourist demand, the Board approved a proposal to expand river safaris on the Gerua River in Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary along the Uttar Pradesh–Nepal border. Currently, two boats operate on the river, but plans are underway to introduce two more environmentally friendly boats, doubling safari capacity while minimizing ecological impact on riverbanks.
Anubhav-Tharu Culture and Tharu Thali Scheme
A highlight of the Board meeting was the “Anubhav-Tharu Culture” initiative, designed to revive and showcase the cultural heritage of the Tharu tribe residing in the Terai region. The program will offer tourists an immersive experience, including traditional Tharu cuisine through the “Tharu Thali” scheme. Local hotel and resort operators have been instructed to include these traditional dishes on their menus. Additionally, training programs will empower Tharu youth with skills in food preparation, hospitality, and cultural presentation, contributing to socio-economic development.
Redevelopment of Chandan Chowki Shilpgram
The Board also proposed redeveloping the Chandan Chowki Shilpgram, a cultural center in the Dudhwa region built by the Tribal Development Department. Currently closed, the Shilpgram will host handicraft exhibitions, cultural programs, and workshops highlighting the arts of Tharu and other tribal communities. Plans suggest that the Tourism Department, Eco-Tourism Board, and Tourism Corporation, in collaboration with private investors and the Tribal Development Department, will jointly operate and manage the facility.
Sustainable Tourism and Community Development at the Forefront
Through these initiatives, Uttar Pradesh aims to combine eco-tourism with cultural preservation and community empowerment. By developing infrastructure and promoting responsible tourism, the state seeks to enhance local employment, preserve tribal traditions, and boost economic growth while maintaining ecological balance.
