The Chief Secretary of Kerala, Dr. V Venu, an IAS officer of 1990 batch, has presented a report to the CM on suspension of IG P Vijayan, an IPS officer of 1999 batch.
In his report, Mr. Venu recommends the withdrawal of the suspension order. This follow-up report emphasizes that reinstating the IG will not impede the ongoing departmental investigation.
It is worth mentioning that two months after the suspension, a review committee led by the Chief Secretary recommended the reinstatement of the IG.
IG Vijayan was suspended after the allegations that he had leaked travel details of a suspect related to the Elathur train arson case on May 18. The IG refuted all such allegations in his response to the government’s notice of disciplinary action.
This suspension started a controversy within the police force, with some arguing that it should have been limited to a warning, while others believed that Vijayan had committed a serious violation of rules.
