Central Police Forces Grapple with Acute Crunch: 178 DIG and SP Positions Remain Vacant

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) are facing the most significant impact

Three officers, holding the ranks of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Superintendent of Police (SP), are currently available for central deputation to fill a total of 178 vacancies. As of the latest “offer list” updated on November 21, there are 11 senior IPS officers who have been cleared for central deputation by their respective state cadres and governments. Among them, one holds the rank of DIG, while two hold the rank of SP.

Across central police organizations and central forces, there are a total of 215 vacancies at various ranks, including DG, ADG, IG, DIG, and SP. However, the shortage is particularly pronounced at the DIG and SP levels. According to the vacancy status report from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), out of the total 215 vacancies, 178 positions remain unfilled at the DIG and SP ranks within central police agencies and organizations.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) are facing the most significant impact, as these two organizations have the highest number of vacancies at the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Superintendent of Police (SP) levels.
