Mr Ramesh Babu V. has officially been sworn in as a Member of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). The oath of office and secrecy was administered by the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R. K. Singh, in a ceremony held on May 21, 2024.

Mr Babu brings a wealth of experience to his new role, holding an M.Tech degree in Thermal Engineering and a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. His professional journey includes a significant tenure as Director (Operations) at NTPC, where he served from May 2020 until his retirement. Prior to this, he occupied various positions within NTPC, contributing extensively to its operations and growth.

CERC plays a pivotal role in the Indian electricity sector. Established under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998 and now governed by the Electricity Act, 2003, CERC is tasked with regulating tariffs for generating companies controlled by the Central Government and other multi-state entities, managing inter-state electricity transmission, and ensuring efficient, economic operations within the industry. The Commission, comprising a Chairperson, three Members, and an ex-officio Member from the Central Electricity Authority, also handles licensing, dispute resolution, and advisory functions related to national electricity and tariff policies.

Mr Ramesh Babu V.’s appointment is expected to enhance CERC’s capability to meet its regulatory responsibilities and promote further investment in India’s rapidly evolving electricity sector.
