Just a month after being appointed Chairman of the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC), IPS officer Hasmukh Patel resigned from the Indian Police Service (IPS). Officer Patel was slated to take charge as the GPSC Chairman on November 11th.

A 1993-batch IPS officer from the Gujarat cadre, Patel holds the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) and also serves as the Managing Director of the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation Limited. In addition, he chairs both the Gujarat Police Recruitment Board and the Gujarat Panchayat Service Selection Board. With Patel’s resignation, the Gujarat government will now have to fill these important positions. He holds a master’s degree in engineering and a PhD, among other academic qualifications.

Born and raised in Banaskantha district of Gujarat, Patel has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Gujarat cadre of the IPS, taking on various key roles. As Superintendent of Police, he was responsible for overseeing critical functions related to Prohibition in Surat, Porbandar, Valsad, and Bhavnagar Railway. His career also includes significant roles as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP), where he managed the Surat and Gandhinagar Ranges, as well as the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the State Monitoring Cell.

Known for his multi-dimensional administrative skills and vast experience, Patel has earned a reputation as a highly competent officer. His proactive approach on social media, particularly in addressing the concerns of candidates and ensuring transparency in recruitment, has made him a popular figure among the youth, fostering trust and admiration.

Last year, the seasoned IPS officer faced significant challenges, including a paper leak scandal, yet he successfully ensured the smooth conduct of recruitment exams. His efficient management of the situation, along with his leadership in overseeing the Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) examination, further cemented his standing as a capable and dependable leader. By upholding the integrity of the recruitment process, Patel restored candidates’ faith in the system, earning widespread praise for his honest and effective leadership.
