Aligning with the New Education Policy 2020 and Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Policy 2013, Gurugram’s education landscape has witnessed a significant overhaul. Spearheading this initiative is Nishant Yadav, a 2013 batch IAS officer and Deputy Commissioner, along with the collaborative efforts of the Women & Child Development Department’s Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program.

PLAYSCHOOLS

The cornerstone of this initiative lies in recognizing the pivotal role of early childhood care and education. With 80% of a child’s brain development occurring before the age of 6, the introduction of Playway Schools was imperative. A total of 104 Anganwadi centres in Gurugram were identified and transformed into these modern pedagogical institutions, emphasizing cognitive, mathematical, literacy, physical, and language development. Under the 5+3+3+4 educational structure, targeting children aged 3 to 8, these Playway Schools are enhancing the foundational years of education.

UPGRADED INFRSTRUCTURE

These newly established Playway Schools boast upgraded infrastructure, a vital component of the initiative. Speaking with Indian Masterminds, IAS officer Nishant Yadav shared that special focus has been placed on six key parameters: sufficient room space, metered electricity, water purifiers, kitchen facilities, child-friendly toilets, and BaLa paintings (Building as learning aids). Basic educational paraphernalia, learning materials, and play-based items have also been provided, ensuring a conducive environment for effective learning.

“As per Pratham’s field level data, Gurugram has 1,331 children. So far, approximately 1500 children have been enrolled in these playschools, with a majority of them in rural parts of the district,” Mr. Yadav mentioned.

MODERN TECHNOLOGIES

Furthermore, the administration has leveraged modern technologies to enhance monitoring and engagement. Tools like the Bal Samvardhan Portal and POSHAN Tracker have been employed to track attendance and vital developmental information. Innovative approaches such as WhatsApp Groups, facilitated by Rocket Learning in select schools, have become mediums for interactive learning, enriching the educational experience for the young minds.

MANAGEMENT

Mr. Yadav further informed that the management of these Playway Schools operates on a multifaceted level. At the grassroots, dedicated Anganwadi workers oversee day-to-day affairs, supported by Anganwadi helpers. Administrative supervision is provided by experienced professionals, including Supervisors, Child Development Program Officers, and District Program Officers. Ensuring accountability and smooth execution, Gurugram has established District-level ECCE Committees comprising key stakeholders, facilitating internal reviews and monitoring.

A unique aspect of this initiative is the active involvement of the community. Village heads of the respective areas housing these Playway Schools have been encouraged to participate actively in maintenance and infrastructure development.

FEEDBACK

The impact of these Playway Schools extends beyond education. With a focus on children from low-income backgrounds, parents find solace in the assurance of their children’s education, nutritional needs, and overall well-being.

Looking ahead, Gurugram envisions an even broader transformation. The Chief Minister has announced plans to scale up this initiative, with an additional 4,000 Playway Schools slated to be established in the coming year. Moreover, private firms expressing interest in supporting these schools through CSR initiatives highlight the growing recognition of the program’s significance.
