Hassled MP Traffic Police Gets Help from Unexpected Quarters

Indian Masterminds Stories

It is indeed a pleasant sight to witness two different government departments working closely together for a good cause. When Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education stepped up to help the traffic police in creating awareness, their gesture set a great example of cross department collaboration between government bodies.  All thanks to Ms. Sheela Dahima, Additional Secretary, Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE).

She is also a poet and writer, who continuously creates educative videos for students, titled ‘Baatein Kaam Ki’.

Speaking to Indian Masterminds, the IAS officer shared that she was impressed by Bhopal Police Commissioners Harinarayanachari Mishra’s initiative called ‘Yatayat Mitra’ and wanted to contribute to it.

MOTIVATING PEOPLE

Road accidents, causing death and injuries to thousands, is a major concern for the state government and the public. Taking note of the issue, Ms. Dahima thought of doing something which can bring down these unfortunate incidents. When the police commissioner announced an initiative called Yatayat Mitra, she thought of making herself a part of this noble work. She held a meeting with her staff members and presented her thoughts. Many agreed with her and more than 50 volunteered to help.

“Our team does the usual routine work, but I always believe every human being has a lot more potential. The only thing required is some motivation and a correct path,” said Ms. Dahima.

She along with her team members now try to spend more than an hour on traffic signals spreading awareness among people about traffic rules, helmets, and over speeding. They have formed a WhatsApp group with two members of the Yatayat Mitra campaign. In the group, they collaborate about the time and place where the team will be visiting on a particular day.

STEPPING UP

The police department has appreciated this effort of Ms. Dahima and the police commissioner has honoured the various team members for their contribution. Till now, the MPBSE team is focusing on awareness. Soon, they are going to have another meeting with the traffic department to discuss how they can extend their support further, whether they can step up and help in traffic control and other stuff.

INVOLVING SCHOOL CHILDREN

Ms. Dahima is also planning to include children in this awareness campaign. She has written a letter to the Principal Secretary of School Education department, suggesting involving school children, teachers and school bus drivers in the traffic rules awareness campaign. If consent is given, soon, school children along with their teachers will be seen on busy roads helping in the smooth movement of traffic.
