Girisha Chaudhary’s journey to securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 263 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2023 is a demonstration of bold decisions, self-discovery, and staying true to one’s goals. Once comfortably settled in a corporate job, Girisha chose to leave behind financial security to follow her dream of joining the civil service. Her story reflects how personal values, family influence, and a sense of purpose can guide someone toward achieving great things.

SHAPING THE FOUNDATION

Girisha’s family has a history marked by both struggle and success. Her grandparents were forced to migrate from Pakistan during the partition, an event that displaced countless families. Despite the hardships they faced, Girisha’s grandfather worked relentlessly, securing a position as a Patwari, which provided stability to the family. Girisha’s grandmother played an equally crucial role, supporting the family through challenging times.

Her parents, both working in banking, continued the family tradition of hard work. Her father rose to the position of branch manager, while her mother also contributed to the family’s success. They instilled in Girisha the values of hard work, focus, and striving for excellence.

Growing up in this environment, Girisha understood that success wasn’t handed to anyone—it had to be earned. It was these early lessons that laid the foundation for her future decisions and equipped her with the mental strength to take the significant step of pursuing the UPSC exam.

SECURITY vs. PURPOSE

After completing her education, Girisha joined a reputed firm in Gurugram, where she enjoyed financial stability, career progression, and a comfortable lifestyle. But as time passed, she began to feel unfulfilled. Despite excelling in her work, she sensed that she was meant for something more—a role where she could contribute meaningfully to society.

The decision to leave her secure job was difficult. On one hand, she had the comfort of a well-paying position; on the other, there was the unpredictable yet impactful path of civil services. After months of careful thought, Girisha chose to follow her passion for public service, quitting her job to focus entirely on preparing for the UPSC CSE.

A LIFE-ALTERING CHOICE

Girisha knew that preparing for the UPSC was no small feat. It would demand not only hard work and discipline but also sacrifices. What she didn’t realise at the time was how much this decision would transform her as a person.

Her approach to preparation was methodical and disciplined. She knew that success didn’t lie in long hours of unproductive study but in efficient work and wise time management. Choosing the right resources, staying organised, and understanding key concepts were essential. She balanced hard work with mental clarity, ensuring she stayed focused amid the pressure.

Girisha’s preparation also included keeping up with current affairs. She diligently read news and articles on governance, policy, and socio-economic issues, which were crucial for the general studies papers and interview. Additionally, constant revision and answer-writing practice became an integral part of her strategy.

THE UPSC RESULT

After a year of focused preparation, Girisha’s efforts bore fruit when the UPSC 2023 results were announced. Her name appeared with an All India Rank of 263. For Girisha, the rank wasn’t just a number; it symbolised the culmination of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment to her goal.

The joy of the achievement was profound, but what mattered even more was the satisfaction of knowing she had made the right decision in leaving her corporate job. The sense of purpose that she had been searching for was now within reach. She firmly believes that it’s never too late to make a change and pursue something meaningful.

Today, Girisha stands as an IRS officer, ready to take on the challenges of a career in public service. Her story is a powerful reminder that with conviction and purpose, it is possible to reshape one’s destiny and make a lasting impact on society.
