Son Cracked UPSC, Daughters Engineer & Doctor, Father Says He Never Discriminated Between Them

Indian Masterminds Stories

Ahmed Hasanuzzaman Choudhury from Assam is one of the 20 students from Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy (RCA) to clear the Civil Services Examination this year. This was his third attempt and he cleared it successfully getting AIR 283. He hails from Lakhirband in South Assam’s Hailakandi district. He completed his BTech from Jamia Millia Islamia University in 2017 and started preparing for the UPSC exam. At the same time, he enrolled in Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to pursue MA in Political Science which helped him in his optional paper preparation.

LACK OF AWARENESS IN BARAK VALLEY ABOUT UPSC

Hasanuzzaman is the second person to succeed in UPSC from Barak Valley. According to him, the lack of awareness about UPSC in the valley is the reason behind this low success rate. While talking to media, he pointed out, “We do not start early. Students in our area start thinking about UPSC only after they complete graduation. While in other states, students start preparing from school days. This attitude gives them more success while we fall behind.”

THE FIRST PERSON FROM THE VALLEY TO CRACK UPSC HAPPY!

The first person to crack UPSC from the Barak Valley is currently a Deputy Commissioner in Majuli, the world’s largest river island. He is IAS officer Bikram Kairi. A happy Mr. Kairi said, “After 6-7 years, we have another student who has successfully passed the UPSC examination. This shows that we have talented students, but we do not have the proper platform to nourish them. I hope, with this success, Hasanuzzaman keeps motivating more students to try.”

SON, DAUGHTERS ALL ACHIEVERS, FATHER SAYS HE NEVER DISCRIMINATED

Hasanuzzaman is the son of retired Assam Electronics Development Corporation (AEGCL) Chief General Manager (CGM), Jakir Ahmed Choudhury. His grandfather is a retired judge. He has two elder sisters. One sister is a gynaecologist and the other is a software engineer. His father said, “I have two daughters and one son. I never discriminated between them and tried to give them all proper education. As a government employee, I always wanted my kids to crack the UPSC examination. When my son expressed his desire to start preparing for it, I was very happy. Today I am a proud father and I want my son to serve the society as a good human being.”

FAMILY SUPPORTED HIM WHEN HE CHOSE NOT TO WORK

Apart from the methods taught in Jamia’s residential coaching, Hasanuzzaman practiced self-motivation and self-preparation. He said, “There is a three-layer examination process in UPSC, and you can fall short in any one of them. It demotivates many students and this was one of the toughest challenges for me also. After two unsuccessful attempts, I was facing challenging moments. But I stayed focused on the examination. I have to thank my family because they supported me all throughout.”

To show to what extent his family supported him, he revealed that when he chose not to take up a job and, instead, prepare for UPSC exam, his father supported his decision and stood by his side.
