When IAS officer Madhumita became an IAS officer after clearing Civil Services Examination in 2019, she fulfilled her own and her father’s dream, too. Her father father, who is an ex-serviceman in the Air Force, appeared for the civil services exam in 1987 but couldn’t clear it. His unfulfilled dream came true through the success of his daughter who, with hard work and dedication, became an IAS officer, proving that when you have a clear vision for aspirations, no one can stop you from fulfilling them. Today, Indian Masterminds brings to you the success story of IAS officer Madhumita who is currently posted as Sub Collector, Ganjam, Odisha.

FATHER’S DREAM COME TRUE

Hailing from the small town Samalkha of Panipat, IAS Madhumita secured 86th rank in CSE in her third attempt. Her father Mahavir Singh, who is an ex-serviceman in the Air Force, once gave the Civil Services Exam in 1987 but couldn’t clear it. However, he saw his unfulfilled dream becoming true through his daughter’s success in the same exam, where she secured AR 86 to get allotted Indian Administrative Service.

She says that during her preparation days, she had her father’s photo stuck on her wardrobe which inspired her to work harder.

BACKGROUND

Ms. Madhumita completed her schooling at Maharaja Agrasen School and secured 96% in 10th and 88% in her 12th. For her graduation, she pursued BBA from PIET College and an MA in Public Administration from IGNOU. She is also a gold medalist in the All-India Maths Olympiad conducted by Kurukshetra University.

Her mother Darshan Devi is a homemaker, and she also has two brothers.

THREE ATTEMPTS

IAS Madhumita gave her first UPSC attempt in the year 2017. In her first attempt, she managed to clear the mains examination but couldn’t make to the interview. She again gave her second attempt in 2018 but couldn’t clear Prelims.

Finally in the year 2019, after preparing again with much more hard work and dedication, she cleared the exam with all India 86 rank to get IAS. This time, she had joined coaching institutes in Delhi to prepare herself in a much better way.

“It was my father’s dream, he always wanted to see me as a top-level officer,” IAS officer Madhumita told media soon after her success.

PARENTS’ SUPPORT

After two consecutive failures, her relatives had started taunting her and approached her parents for her marriage. However, her parents stood by her side like a pillar and constantly supported her in her UPSC journey. She gives credit for her success to her parents. Her parents’ firm belief in her and their support helped her to clear UPSC CSE and make her family and hometown proud of her.

CLEAR VISION

Ms. Madhumita had a clear vision all throughout. She just focused on her dream, not on any kind of external disturbances. Once, she even skipped her cousin’s wedding to prepare for her examination. All these small sacrifices helped her to reach her desired destination.

In Madhumita’s successful journey, the test series played a vital role. After getting disappointed with her first two attempts, she moved to Delhi and enrolled herself in the test series. According to her, solving test series in an exam-like environment helps one to understand the pressure of the actual exam and evaluate oneself to prepare in the correct direction.

ADVICE TO ASPIRANTS

IAS officer Madhumita advises UPSC aspirants to stay away from social media. She says that staying away from social media doesn’t mean to abandon your mobile phone. Instead, she advises the aspirants to take advantage of technology for getting access to online study materials.

“You cannot go without a clear vision or a roadmap. Therefore, the very first thing you should do before starting your preparation is to analyse the syllabus. UPSC syllabus is lengthy and a detailed one, and not having a clear perspective of the exam will never help you,” she said.

However, stressing on the importance of taking some time out to relax in the midst of studies, she also added, “Take out one or two hours from your timetable for relaxation and other leisure activities.”
