Indian Masterminds Stories

“Success is born not from talent alone, but from persistence in the face of uncertainty.”

Some stories are written with ink, and some with sheer determination. The story of Vivek Agrawal, who secured Rank 1 in the MPPSC 2023 DSP list, belongs to the latter category. It is the tale of a young man who refused to give up despite interviews, withheld results, uncertainties, failures, and the unpredictable twists of competitive exams. In the end, what shone through was not just his success – but his character, his patience, and his officer-like mindset.

Indian Masterminds interacted with Mr Agrawal to learn about his inspiring journey, how he achieved MPPSC DSP Rank 1, and maintained patience and composure through years of struggle and delayed results.

A JOURNEY CARVED BY WILLPOWER

From a small tehsil in Sagar district to securing one of the most prestigious positions in Madhya Pradesh, Vivek’s path has been anything but easy. Four consecutive years of interviews – 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 – would test any aspirant’s resilience. His results for two years were withheld due to a reservation case in the Supreme Court. One year he cleared the interview but didn’t make the final list. Another year he couldn’t clear prelims.

Yet he kept moving, kept preparing, kept evolving. And finally, in MPPSC 2023 – the year whose results were not under any legal hold – Vivek emerged as a topper, securing Rank 1 in the DSP category.

His success proves one eternal truth: Those who persist, conquer.

BACKGROUND: ROOTED IN SIMPLICITY, FUELED BY DREAMS

Vivek’s story begins in Rahatgarh, a tehsil in Sagar district, where he completed his schooling up to the tenth standard. Coming from a modest family, his father is a farmer, and his mother is a homemaker. The values of discipline, humility, and hard work were not taught — they were lived in his household.

After school, Vivek pursued a B.Sc. in Forensic Science from Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, completing his graduation in 2019. His academic background in Forensic Science later became a central topic in almost every interview panel he faced – and one that he handled with maturity and confidence.

JOURNEY SO FAR: FOUR YEARS, FOUR INTERVIEWS, ONE UNBREAKABLE SPIRIT

Vivek began preparing for MPPSC immediately after his graduation in 2019, entering the exam cycle in 2020.

His journey is extraordinary –

  • In 2020, he reached the interview stage but did not make the final selection.
  • In 2021 and 2022, he once again received interview calls, but the final results were withheld due to the ongoing 13% reservation case in the Supreme Court. While some candidates received appointments, a significant portion – including Vivek – had their results kept on hold.
  • In 2023, the only year whose results were fully unrestricted, he achieved the breakthrough he had waited years for: selection as DySP with Rank 1 in the list.
  • Despite this consistency, 2024 brought another setback when he could not clear the prelims. Yet even this did not break his spirit – he is again preparing for the 2025 Mains with the same fire.

His journey, filled with suspense, withheld results, and repeated interviews, shows that success does not come to the most talented – it comes to the most persistent.

PREPARATION STRATEGY: CRAFTING HIMSELF INTO AN OFFICER

Vivek’s preparation strategy was grounded in discipline and long-term focus. During his initial phase, he spent 12 to 15 months completely immersed in preparation, studying 8 to 10 hours each day. This was the time when he built the strongest foundation — a foundation solid enough to fetch him interview calls for four consecutive years.

Once he felt confident about his syllabus and content, he gradually reduced his study hours and started teaching students, which helped him revise, reinforce concepts, and stay deeply connected with the subjects.

For the Mains examination, he followed a strict rule

  • Daily answer writing for 40–45 minutes.
  • He believes this single habit corrects issues of speed, formatting, and presentation – the very areas where most aspirants struggle.

And for the interview, he did not just study; he shaped his personality. He always maintained that MPPSC is not merely a knowledge test but a personality-development journey. From the first day of preparation, he tried to think, act, and respond like an officer – developing opinions on government policies, understanding societal issues, and keeping himself updated on cultural and current events.

INTERVIEW EXPERIENCES: WHERE KNOWLEDGE MEETS PERSONALITY

Each year, his interview experience grew richer. But the 2023 interview became the turning point.

The panel spent nearly five minutes discussing why he chose Civil Services despite having a degree in Forensic Science — a question that he believes earned him his outstanding 140 marks in the interview. His clarity, conviction, and honesty impressed the board.

The interview happened on Nag Panchami, leading to further questions about the festival — its history, cultural significance, and environmental aspects, especially relating to snakes. They also questioned him on the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, asking how it differed from other schemes.

These questions highlighted the importance of cultural awareness and current events — something Vivek always kept in focus.

BIGGEST STRUGGLE: THE BATTLE WITH UNCERTAINTY AND LACK OF GUIDANCE

Vivek openly admits that his biggest struggle was the lack of proper guidance during the initial phase of his preparation. He had to learn everything slowly — from understanding the nature of the exam to recognizing the importance of personality development and answer writing.

The second major struggle was emotional and mental: surviving the stress of withheld results. Preparing for years without receiving final results for two consecutive attempts would shake anyone’s confidence. Yet he stayed grounded, patient, and hopeful.

His journey teaches one powerful lesson: Guidance helps, but self-belief builds champions.

TURNING POINTS THAT SHAPED HIS SUCCESS

One major turning point was when Vivek realized that Civil Services is not merely about studying books – it is also about evolving as a person. This changed his entire approach.

Another turning point was the depth he brought to the Forensic Science question in the interview. Handling that with maturity not only impressed the board but also solidified his belief that his diverse background was actually his strength.

And of course, the unwavering consistency of receiving interview calls year after year reassured him that he was always on the right track.

MESSAGE TO ASPIRANTS: PATIENCE, DISCIPLINE, AND PERSONALITY

Vivek’s message is heartfelt and rooted in his own experiences.

He believes MPPSC requires patience more than anything else. Aspirants must prepare sincerely for at least fifteen months, staying away from distractions and focusing completely on the exam. He emphasizes that this is not just an academic exam — it is an exam that shapes you into an officer.

From the very beginning, aspirants should cultivate officer-like qualities: expressing opinions, staying aware of societal and governmental matters, maintaining calmness, and developing balanced thinking.

And above all, practice answer writing daily. According to him, fifteen months of disciplined preparation, combined with regular practice and consistent self-improvement, can undoubtedly produce an excellent Deputy Collector or DySP.

THE RISE OF DSP VIVEK AGRAWAL: A SYMBOL OF RESILIENCE

Vivek’s journey is not defined by the year he topped. It is defined by the four years he kept trying. By the years when results were withheld. By the times he reached the final stage but did not see his name on the list.
And yet, he refused to accept defeat.

Today, DSP Vivek Agrawal stands as an inspiration for thousands — a living example that destiny may test us, delay us, confuse us, but it can never stop us if we keep moving forward.

His story is a reminder that success doesn’t always come fast, but it always comes to those who wait with discipline, fight with perseverance, and rise every time life knocks them down.
