Education is not just about textbooks and exams; it is about nurturing young minds to become confident, capable, and responsible citizens. Recognising this, the Bal Shakthi initiative was launched to uplift students beyond conventional academic frameworks. By integrating four crucial components—health & wellness, financial literacy, skill development, and exposure to social institutions—this initiative reshapes the educational experience and prepares students for real-world challenges.

Aimed at fostering physical well-being, financial independence, essential life skills, and societal awareness, the program equips students with tools to navigate their future effectively. The vision is clear: to build a generation that is academically proficient and well-prepared for life’s complexities.

The initiative is the brainchild of IAS officer Abhilasha Abinav [2018 batch, Telangana cadre], District Collector of Nirmal. Speaking with Indian Masterminds, Ms. Abhilasha shared about the program in detail.

STRENGTHENING HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

The program emphasises student health through systematic screenings and interventions. “Across 57 institutions, 17,545 students underwent health screenings, identifying 384 anaemia cases, 892 refractive errors, and 180 thyroid cases. These findings led to early interventions, including nutritional counselling and medical assistance provided by RBSK MHTs, DEIC, and PHC Mos,” Ms. Abhilasha shared with Indian Masterminds

Menstrual hygiene education is another priority, with sessions addressing health concerns and hygiene practices. Paediatrician Dr. Satheesh conducted nutritional counselling, while awareness campaigns under Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao reached 6,537 students. Additionally, stress management counselling sessions by Dr. Suresh, a psychiatrist, support students in handling academic and personal challenges.

FINANCIAL LITERACY AND FUTURE STABILITY

Recognising the need for financial awareness from an early age, Bal Shakthi includes structured learning on money management. The initiative covers opening savings bank accounts, mock banking exercises, and educating parents through children on financial planning. Concepts like thrift habits, cyber security awareness, and ‘Kiddy Bank’ encourage responsible financial behaviour.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR A COMPETITIVE WORLD

A Coding Skills Project was introduced in 2024-25 in collaboration with Next Skills 360 Edutech Pvt. Ltd., targeting students from classes VIII to X in 48 schools. The project has impacted 8,877 students, with 144 teachers and 886 student trainers receiving training. Over 9,021 program kits have been distributed to students and teachers.

Beyond coding, the initiative fosters skills such as self-defence, computational skills, life skills, communication, yoga, meditation, drawing, painting, essay writing, elocution, debate, student parliaments, cultural performances, sports activities, and career counselling. These efforts ensure students gain confidence and practical expertise.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CLASSROOMS AND SOCIETY

Bal Shakthi provides exposure to real-world institutions. Through structured visits, students engage with banks, post offices, police and fire stations, courts, Gram Panchayats, health centres, small-scale industries, irrigation projects, agriculture research centres, and Anganwadi centres. Additionally, trips to premier institutions such as BASAR IIIT and medical colleges provide students with academic inspiration.

In September alone, visits were organised to four Gram Panchayats, three PHCs, and four banks. Students interacted with district authorities, observed public service operations, and gained insight into administrative structures. The program also facilitated discussions with role models, including successful alumni, and arranged guest lectures with students from premier institutions.

A ROADMAP FOR THE FUTURE

The initiative continues to evolve, with plans to introduce Training of Trainers (TOT) models for skill development, expand guest lecture series, and conduct elocution competitions in schools. These efforts aim to make students independent, well-informed, and capable of navigating both academic and social challenges.

By equipping students with essential life skills, financial knowledge, and exposure to various professions, Bal Shakthi is setting a new benchmark in student development. It goes beyond education, fostering well-rounded individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
