Ever heard of a Banana Festival? Burhanpur, a district in Madhya Pradesh known for its extensive banana cultivation, is gearing up to celebrate its much-loved fruit with a festival named after it.

The first-ever Banana Festival will be held on 20 and 21 February under the stewardship of IAS officer Bhavya Mittal, who is the District Magistrate of Burhanpur. The festival is not just about celebration; it is also a strategic move aimed at elevating the district’s banana industry to greater heights.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, Ms. Mittal shared details about the upcoming festival.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

At the heart of this initiative lies the participation of Self Help Group (SHG) women who have already undergone training in banana fiber extraction and the creation of handicrafts using this versatile material.

The festival aims to expand their horizons by introducing training sessions on the utilization of banana textiles in a more sophisticated format. Inspired by the success of banana sarees in Kerala, the festival organizers envision replicating this success in Burhanpur, leveraging the district’s impressive banana cultivation of approximately 24,000 acres.

DESIGNING SUCCESS

The festival is not merely a local affair; it has drawn the attention of research and tech experts from prestigious institutions such as IIT Delhi and the Nausari Banana Research Center. These experts are expected to provide valuable guidance on diversifying banana products beyond traditional uses.

“The availability of cheap banana fibre in the region makes it an excellent resource for creating innovative products, and the festival aims to showcase these creations to potential buyers through both online and offline platforms,” Ms. Mittal told Indian Masterminds.

MARKET INTEGRATION

A crucial aspect of the festival is the meet-and-greet sessions between suppliers and producers. This platform is designed to facilitate bulk purchases and sales, creating a symbiotic relationship between those creating banana-based products and those seeking quality offerings.

“With an abundance of turmeric cultivation in the district, the festival will also explores the potential of turmeric powder and turmeric oil, adding another layer to the event’s richness,” the officer shared.

SECURING FUNDS

Another highlight is the session by SHG women showcasing their efforts to secure funds under the Rashtra Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY), a government scheme offering financial support to agricultural ventures.

“The RKVY funds, amounting to 10 lakh rupees, empower these women to expand their product lines and supply chains,” stated Ms. Mittal.

This initiative aligns with the festival’s broader goal of taking the existing work in the district to new heights.

BRIDGING SECTORS

However, organizing an event of this magnitude comes with its set of challenges. The primary hurdle lies in bringing together stakeholders from both private and government sectors onto a unified platform.

The ultimate goal is to derive tangible outcomes from the festival, such as increased employment opportunities for women and the discovery of high-quality banana-based products. The involvement of design experts will ensure that the products align with market trends, enhancing their commercial viability.

UNLOCKING OPPORTUNITIES

The festival will also serve as a gateway for SHG women to explore opportunities under the PM Vishu Karma Yojana, a government scheme offering loans at a 5% interest rate and comprehensive training.

“Many women have already applied for these loans, which could open up avenues for further growth and expansion in the banana fiber industry,” Ms. Mittal said.

Set to be held on the 20th and 21st of February, the Burhanpur Banana Festival will not just be a local event; it will be a step towards transforming the district into a hub for banana-based innovations. Through collaboration, training, and strategic planning, IAS officer Bhavya Mittal and her team aim to set a precedent for similar initiatives across the country, unlocking the full potential of banana cultivation and empowering communities along the way.
