Dehradun: In a recent significant bureaucratic reshuffle in state, 2012 batch IAS officer Ashish Chauhan (Uttarakhand cadre) has been entrusted with dual responsibilities as the Chief Executive Officer of Uttarakhand Civil Aviation and Development Authority (UCADA) and Director of the Sports Department.

Known for his proactive governance and people-centric approach, Mr Chauhan’s appointment comes after a series of successful tenures as District Magistrate in strategically important districts like Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, and Pauri.

This move places him at the helm of two key departments currently under public and administrative focus – civil aviation, due to recent helicopter accidents, and sports, following Uttarakhand’s successful hosting of the 38th National Games.

Track Record of Service in Challenging Terrains

Mr Chauhan has served for more than five years in the border and mountainous districts of Uttarakhand, earning a reputation for dedicated service and innovative governance.

In Uttarkashi, Chauhan won public acclaim for his hospitality and sensitivity towards tourists. His impactful work left such an impression on a Spanish tourist that an unnamed hill in Spain was named after him.

In Pithoragarh, he initiated the “Government Organic Brand Reliance”, giving new identity and market value to hill-grown figs, while promoting women’s employment. This initiative was recognized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast as a model example of local development.

As DM of Pauri, Chauhan became known for his night visits to remote villages, holding direct public meetings and addressing grievances firsthand – uncommon for a senior officer in the region.

Return to UCADA Amidst Aviation Safety Concerns

Chauhan’s return as CEO of UCADA comes at a crucial time. The department has been in the spotlight following recent helicopter accidents in the state. Speaking to ETV Bharat after taking charge, Chauhan stated:

“All operations in the department are currently normal. Investigations into recent incidents are ongoing, and we will fully cooperate with DGCA. My top priority will be to ensure heli services in Uttarakhand are safe, smooth, and reliable.”

This will be his second stint as UCADA CEO, indicating the government’s confidence in his ability to stabilize and reform the sector.

Focus on Infrastructure and Grassroots Development

In addition to UCADA, Chauhan has also been assigned the role of Director, Sports Department. With the recent success of the 38th National Games hosted by Uttarakhand, the state has seen significant investment in world-class sports infrastructure. Chauhan is now tasked with ensuring optimal utilization and maintenance of these assets.

He emphasized the importance of accessibility – “Our goal is to make these facilities available to the athletes of Uttarakhand so that both sports and sportspersons are empowered. Maintenance and maximum use of infrastructure will be our primary focus.”

A Strategic Appointment

Mr Chauhan’s dual appointment signals a strategic move by the Uttarakhand government to place trusted and proven leadership in departments crucial to the state’s development and public confidence. With his reputation for hard work, accessibility, and innovative governance, Chauhan is expected to bring transformative changes to both civil aviation and sports administration in the state.
