Known as a ‘Dhakad’ police officer, the 2007-batch Indian Police Service officer from Himachal Pradesh cadre, Ms. Rani Bindu Sachdeva recently lived the proudest and probably the most memorable moment of her life when she was decorated with the prestigious President’s Police Medal.

Indian Masterminds takes a look at her journey and celebrates her achievement in civil service.

A FEARLESS POLICE OFFICER

Words like ‘fearless’, ‘determined’, ‘valiant’, etc. hold true for describing the officer. But, at the same time, the officer is soft-hearted and good-natured when off duty.

Hailing from the Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, which was previously referred to as Nagarkot, Ms. Sachdeva never ever bowed down in front of powerful and influential politicians and stood her ground against them whenever it was required.

Her valor was talked about the most, and under her wings, the people of her district knew they were in safe hands.

President’s Police Medal

LADY SINGHAM OF HIMACHAL

People started referring to her as the ‘Lady Singham’ of Himachal Pradesh when she single-handedly brought a particularly difficult situation in her district under control.

It so happened that while the officer was posted as the Additional Superintendent of Police in the Sirmaur district, some notorious anti-social elements of society started creating ruckus in a part of the district. When police personnel went to the area to get the problem sorted out and teach a lesson to the troublemakers, they, in turn, attacked the police personnel and a major riot occurred.

That is when the IPS officer decided to teach a lesson to the rioters and single-handedly entered the area of the anti-social elements and took everyone into custody. Her step created a stir in the district and everyone sang songs of praise for the fearless officer. It was then that she received the name of ‘Lady Singham of Himachal Pradesh’ from the people.

SAYING NO TO FAVORS

Her fearless persona and strong upbringing made Ms. Sachdeva a strong-willed officer who never bowed down to pressure and never begged anyone to achieve something. She refused to give in to politicians’ demands and decided that she will not request them to get promotions in the service.

Maybe this is the reason why, despite being a capable officer, she only received the higher posting of the Superintendent of Police only once, and that too for a very short period of time.

The officer has the courage to stand against whatever is wrong and has the guts to pick up criminals from their homes and throw them behind bars.

The officer received the President’s Police Medal for her achievements and bravery in the service.
