Then a Dentist, Now an IPS Officer

Senior IPS Dr Akun Sabharwal started his life journey as dentist. From busting drug cartels to motivating people through his talks, he is a multi-faceted personality, writes Chinmai Sinha.

There are some who are driven by passion to reach their life’s goal. IPS officer Dr Akun Sabharwal is one of them. He not only made sure of achieving what he actually desired but did so through his principled ideology.

EARLY LIFE

Born in 1976 in Patiala, Punjab, Dr Akun Sabharwal got inspired by his father, who worked in the Indian Air Force. A highly principled man, Dr Sabharwal has appeared in many Ted Talks helping those who look up to him for his unbeatable ways of dealing real life situations both as a human and as an officer.

He did his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalayas of several cities of India like Delhi, Chandigarh, Assam, Ooty, Pune and Bangalore. This helped him understand varied cultures, traditions and social aspects of these places.

Excelling in mathematics, a young Akun chose to be a doctor and became a prolific dentist after completing his medical education from Patiala Dental College. Thereafter he decided to join civil services. He started preparing for the civil service examination while doing his internship as a dentist. To pursue his dream, he did his post-graduation in police management.

An avid marathoner, Dr Sabharwal’s first posting was in Anantapur, Rayalaseema which is known for factional feuds. He served as the superintendent of Vishakhapatnam from 2007 to 2008.

This dauntless officer helped neutralise 36 Maoist cadres and joined Hyderabad as Deputy Commissioner of Police in 2012.

Dr Sabharwal is a 2001 IPS batch officer and also served as a DIG in Law and Order. He became famous in the Telangana media in 2017 as he unmasked the big shots of Tollywood involved in drugs.

As a result of his actions, Dr Sabharwal became a challenge to the industry. He even received threat calls from drug mafias. The callers even told him that they knew where his kids studied.

However, he remained undeterred and true to his profession. He said in a speech, “the target is to say no to drugs and let’s be clear that life can really take you higher than drugs…We need a clean Hyderabad, clean Telangana. The Telangana police is totally committed to a vice free and clean Telangana and we assure each and every citizen of this state that we’ll put in our best efforts to ensure an absolutely vice free Telangana.”

HELPING YOUNG GENERATION UNDERSTAND MEANING OF LIFE

To reach out to the young generation of this country, Dr Sabharwal turned to age-old fables full of life’s meanings. In one of his Ted Talk titled “Be a Butterfly”, Mr Sabharwal talks about “strengths, weakness, threats and opportunities” and successfully captivated the hearts of the audiences by digging deeper into the meaning of life.

Trained in Kamrup Assam, Mr Sabharwal was also awarded Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
