Ayodhya, the holy city on the banks of the Saryu River, is synonymous with ‘Ramayana’ and the ‘birthplace of Lord Rama’. But beyond its religious significance, Ayodhya is rapidly transforming into a vibrant tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year.

Indian Masterminds exclusively spoke with the Director General of Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh, IAS officer Mukesh Meshram, to understand more about Ayodhya and its significance for UP Tourism.

A SURGE IN TOURISM

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2017, Ayodhya saw only 2 lakh tourists, while in 2022, that number skyrocketed to a staggering 2.03 crore, a tenfold increase in just five years. This exponential growth is expected to continue, with NITI Aayog predicting 3 lakh daily visitors by 2024, surpassing even the bustling Varanasi, which currently sees around 1.5 lakh tourists daily.

THE RAM TEMPLE AND AYODHYA’S TOURISM BOOM

Ayodhya is currently experiencing a monumental transformation with the grand Ram Temple, rising majestically on the banks of the Saryu River. More than just a religious edifice, the temple is a symbol of Ayodhya’s resurgence and a catalyst for the booming tourism scene in both the city and Uttar Pradesh.

For centuries, Ayodhya has been a pilgrimage centre for Hindus worldwide. The Ram Janmabhoomi, or the birthplace of Lord Rama, holds immense spiritual significance. The construction of the Ram Temple, therefore, is a dream realized for millions, drawing devotees from far and wide. The intricate carvings, traditional architecture, and colossal scale of the temple promise to be a breathtaking spectacle, attracting even non-religious tourists.

The Ram Temple’s construction has already had a significant impact on Ayodhya’s tourism sector. The surge in tourist footfall has led to a boom in hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, creating new jobs and boosting the local economy.

MODERN METAMORPHOSIS

The Ayodhya of today is not just steeped in the past; it is actively embracing the future. A whopping Rs. 19,445 crore is being invested in various projects, transforming the city into a world-class tourist destination.

Here are some highlights of this transformation:

Tourism Facilitation Centre: This state-of-the-art centre will provide comfortable accommodation, a convention centre, and a cultural hub for visitors.

Museum of Indian Temple Architecture: A collaboration between Tata Sons, the Ministry of Culture, and the Department of Tourism, this museum will showcase the architectural brilliance of temples from across the world.

Development of Six Gate Complexes: These complexes will provide world-class infrastructure, including hotels, food courts, and retail spaces, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for tourists.

EXPERIENCE AYODHYA FROM A BIRD’S EYE VIEW

The city is soon to become more accessible to pilgrims and tourists with the launch of helicopter services from six districts in the state. Starting later this month, devotees can enjoy aerial views of Ayodhya city and the under-construction Ram Temple.

The initiative, overseen by the Tourism Department, will offer aerial darshan tours covering prominent landmarks like Ram Mandir, Hanumangarhi, and Saryu Ghat. Services will be available from Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mathura, Bareily, Jhansi, and Agra.

This convenient and scenic travel option is sure to enhance the pilgrimage experience for Ram devotees and boost tourism in Ayodhya.

AYODHYA’S FUTURE

With its rich history, spiritual significance, and ongoing development, Ayodhya is poised to become a major player on the global tourism map. The city’s future is bright, promising a unique blend of ancient charm and modern amenities, catering to the diverse needs of travellers from all walks of life.

The completion of Ram Temple is expected to propel Ayodhya and UP tourism to new heights. The state government is actively developing infrastructure, including airports, highways, and tourist facilities, to cater to the growing influx of visitors. With its spiritual significance, architectural marvel, and ripple effect on the local economy, the Ram Temple is poised to make Ayodhya a global tourism destination, forever etching its mark on the map of India’s cultural tapestry.
