Indian Masterminds Stories

India has seen numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and security of its citizens, especially women. At the forefront of this transformation in Telangana is IPS officer Swati Lakra, a name synonymous with relentless efforts to safeguard women. As an officer who has been tirelessly working for women’s empowerment and safety, her leadership in implementing and streamlining the Dial 112 emergency response system has been pivotal.

This initiative, particularly in Telangana, has become a ray of hope for countless women, offering immediate assistance during distress and ensuring swift action by the police.

DIAL 112: A GAME CHANGER IN TELANGANA

Launched as a national initiative, Dial 112 serves as a centralized emergency response system aimed at addressing a variety of emergencies, including those related to women’s safety. Telangana’s implementation of the project has been notably efficient. This service operates round the clock, providing instant access to police assistance.

“Dial 112 is not just a helpline, it is a lifeline for many women in distress,” Ms. Lakra explains. “We have structured it in such a way that every call receives immediate attention, and no woman feels abandoned when she needs us the most.”

Since its inception, Dial 112 has been a crucial tool for addressing emergencies. Equipped with a fleet of well-prepared patrol cars, a highly trained response team, and advanced GPS technology to locate the victim, the service ensures swift police intervention. The officer’s vision has been to ensure that every woman in the state, no matter how remote the area, feels secure in the knowledge that help is only a phone call away.

SUCCESS STORIES: HOW DIAL 112 HAS PROTECTED WOMEN

The impact of Dial 112 in Telangana has been transformative, particularly in improving women’s safety. One standout success story took place in 2022 when a 24-year-old woman traveling alone at night in Hyderabad felt threatened by a group of men who were following her. In a state of panic, she dialled 112. Within minutes, a police patrol team arrived at the scene and ensured her safety by detaining the suspects. The promptness of the response saved her from potential harm, and the case became a testament to how Dial 112 can avert dire situations.

Another incident occurred in a rural part of Telangana, where a domestic violence victim contacted Dial 112 during the late hours. A team was dispatched immediately, and not only was the woman rescued, but the perpetrator was arrested on the spot. In a place where access to law enforcement was previously difficult, Dial 112 ensured that justice was swift and help was readily available.

“Our goal is to provide timely help, no matter where the call comes from. We have created a network that connects urban and rural regions, ensuring that no woman is left to suffer in silence,” she told Indian Masterminds.

ENSURING A SAFER TOMORROW

Ms. Lakra’s contributions to women’s safety are not limited to emergency responses. She has been instrumental in raising awareness about Dial 112 through extensive campaigns and collaborations with local communities. She believes that for a system to be truly effective, people must be aware of it and have confidence in its efficacy. To that end, the Telangana police regularly conduct sensitization programs, especially in rural areas, teaching women how to use the service and informing them about their rights.

“We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of calls from rural regions after these awareness programs,” she notes. “It shows that more women trust the system and are willing to use it when in need.”

She also emphasizes the role of technology in making this initiative successful. GPS-enabled patrol vehicles and a centralized control room ensure that response times are minimized.

LOOKING AHEAD

Under the stewardship of IPS Swati Lakra, Telangana has emerged as a model state for women’s safety, with Dial 112 at its core. The helpline continues to evolve with new technologies and methods of intervention, ensuring that it remains a robust tool for protecting women. Ms. Lakra’s vision is to make Telangana the safest place for women in India, where fear has no place and safety is a given.
