In a visionary move, District Magistrate Rishav Gupta of Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, has pioneered an innovative initiative named ‘Coding for Everyone’.
This program, initiated under the aegis of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), is a 400-hour computer programming course aimed at empowering government school students in classes 9 to 12.
Indian Masterminds exclusively spoke with the officer to know more about the project.
CODING FOR EVERYONE
“The primary objective of ‘Coding for Everyone’ is to provide a free, self-paced computer programming course to government school students,” said Mr. Gupta. Developed in collaboration with Codeyogi, the course is conducted in Hindi, making it accessible to students across 183 high schools in the district.
The focus is on industry-standard programming languages, including HTML, JavaScript, React, and NodeJS. The salient features of this initiative, its impact on cost savings, and the unique district-level approach are transforming the educational landscape.
PROCESS RE-ENGINEERING FOR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
The initiative stands out for its inclusivity as it reaches more than 16,000 students, bridging the gap between rural students and the digital world. Unlike traditional programming courses, this initiative utilizes mobile phones and the Telegram app, eliminating the need for expensive laptops or PCs.
Furthermore, to encourage excellence, students showing outstanding performance receive keyboards, mic, and mobile stands through public participation and corporate social responsibility (CSR) donations. The project is a significant step towards leveraging digital tools for education, aligning with the NEP 2020.
BENEFICIARIES AND IMPACT
The beneficiaries of ‘Coding for Everyone’ are the students of classes 9th to 12th in government high and higher secondary schools. The impact is evident in terms of both time and cost savings. The course provides access to cutting-edge programming tools for free, a privilege often reserved for those who can afford expensive private courses.
The decision to use mobile phones as the primary learning tool reflects the reality of the widespread use of smartphones in households, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
UNIQUENESS OF THE INITIATIVE
The initiative complies with the National Education Policy 2020 by imparting industry-standard programming skills. Moreover, the curriculum in Hindi addresses the language barrier, ensuring that students, especially those from rural backgrounds, can grasp the concepts effectively.
“Along with this, the self-paced course structure enables students to continue their regular studies without disruptions, which is also a crucial aspect of the initiative,” Mr. Gupta said.
ADDRESSING CHALLENGES: A PARADIGM SHIFT
The initiative arose from a keen observation of unemployment among educated youth due to a lack of industry-relevant skills. The challenges of limited access to laptops and language barriers were met by adopting a mobile-based learning approach and delivering lectures in Hindi through collaboration with CodeYogi.
TRANSFORMATIVE RESULTS
With the help of the program, students are surpassing expectations, completing modules on HTML and CSS within three months and progressing to advanced JavaScript. Top-performing students receive programming kits, further enhancing their learning experience.
“Furthermore, monthly interactions with students, mentors, and principals inform ongoing modifications to the course content, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness,” Mr. Gupta said.
A teacher from each school, acting as a mentor, enrolled in the course and played a crucial role in the monthly review process. Bots and AI form the backbone of this initiative, delivering video lectures, facilitating assignment submissions, and providing personalized assistance.
A BLUEPRINT FOR CHANGE
The success of the initiative can be replicated with a dedicated team committed to the education of underprivileged students. The use of philanthropic contributions ensures that resources are optimally utilized, providing a scalable model for educational transformation in government schools nationwide.
IAS Rishav Gupta’s ‘Coding for Everyone’ initiative not only exemplifies the potential of digital transformation in education but also sets a benchmark for inclusivity and innovation in district-level governance.
