Fitter Force: How An IPS Officer Transformed Chitradurga Police Wellness

In just three months, Chitradurga’s police force saw dramatic transformations in their health and fitness. Discover how IPS Officer Dharmendra Meena made it happen!
Indian Masterminds Stories

The police department is one of the most high-pressure government sectors, with officers and personnel often putting their well-being, and sometimes their lives, on the line to protect the public. In Chitradurga, Karnataka, 2012 batch IPS Officer Dharmendra Kumar Meena recognized the toll this duty takes on his team.

Long hours, irregular meals, and constant stress had led to widespread lifestyle diseases among his personnel, including obesity, hypertension, and other chronic conditions. With this concern in mind, Mr. Meena launched an ambitious wellness initiative aimed at transforming the health and fitness of his force.

THE GENESIS OF THE POLICE WELLNESS PROGRAM

Determined to bring a change, Mr. Meena initiated the “Police Wellness Programme,” a three-month pilot project in collaboration with Hygear Fit Pvt Ltd.

The program targeted 120 police personnel with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 29, indicating obesity. Utilizing smart fitness devices like the Gear Go elastic band and the HyWatch smartwatch, along with the HyGear mobile application, the initiative aimed to guide, monitor, and track the weekly physical goals of participants.

PERSONALIZED FITNESS: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

The program started with a detailed physical assessment of each participant, followed by the development of personalized weekly workout plans tailored to their age, gender, and BMI levels. The Gear Go elastic band was used for strength training, while the HyWatch smart watch tracked aerobic exercises and the number of steps walked daily.

“The mobile application connects these devices, allowing for real-time tracking of progress and access to video tutorials, effectively acting as a personal trainer for the participants,” Mr. Meena told Indian Masterminds.

REGULAR MONITORING AND SUPPORT

Weekly progress was closely monitored by Mr. Meena, with periodic assessments revealing the need for further guidance in areas like diet and nutrition. Hygear Fit Pvt Ltd provided this support through counseling sessions, helping participants understand the importance of healthy eating habits.

REMARKABLE OUTCOMES: A HEALTHIER FORCE

The results of the Police Wellness Programme were nothing short of remarkable. Out of 120 participants, 34 lost more than 5 kilograms, 30 shed 3 to 5 kilograms, and 44 dropped between 1 and 3 kilograms. Furthermore, 95 participants managed to improve their BMI by more than one point, with 44 of them successfully reducing it below the obesity threshold of 29.

“Even those who were underweight experienced a positive change, gaining healthy weight and moving into the normal BMI range,” shared the officer.

EMPOWERING THE POLICE FORCE

The success of the program demonstrated the effectiveness of the solution provided by HyGear Fit Pvt Ltd, covering all aspects of a supervised personal fitness regime. It allowed Mr. Meena and his team to monitor fitness levels efficiently, helping senior officers keep track of their team’s health and well-being.

Short and effective training sessions, combined with fun and achievable goals, motivated the personnel to commit to a healthier lifestyle.

HOW IT WORKED: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO FITNESS

Hygear’s program included functionality assessments, personalized strength training, aerobic training, and step monitoring using smart devices. The smartwatch recorded exercises and monitored heart rates, while the elastic bands facilitated strength training.

The app connected these tools, providing workout videos and a tracking system for progress. A professional team remotely monitored each participant’s journey, offering immediate responses to their needs and questions.

“We also introduced a rewards system, where participants could earn points and coins for achieving fitness milestones, making the process engaging and rewarding,” Mr. Meena shared with Indian Masterminds.

A MODEL FOR FUTURE WELLNESS INITIATIVES

The Police Wellness Programme in Chitradurga is proof of what focused, personalized fitness initiatives can achieve, especially in high-pressure professions like policing.

The success of this pilot program has set a precedent for other districts and departments, showcasing how technology and a holistic approach to fitness can lead to tangible health improvements.

GRATITUDE AND FUTURE VISION

Mr. Meena extended his gratitude to Shri Sharath Kumar Basavaraju, Director of Hygear Fit Pvt Ltd, and the entire team for their dedication and excellent execution of the program. With the demonstrated success in Chitradurga, this initiative could serve as a blueprint for police departments and other organizations willing to invest in the health and well-being of their personnel.

The Police Wellness Programme led by Mr. Meena is not just a story of weight loss; it is a story of empowerment, health, and commitment to the welfare of those who serve. By prioritizing the fitness and well-being of his team, Mr. Meena has proven that a healthy police force is not only more effective but also more resilient, capable of facing the challenges of their demanding roles with renewed vigor.
