Pamela Satpathy, a 2015-batch IAS officer of the Telangana cadre currently serving as the District Collector of Karimnagar, is no stranger to innovative ideas. Known for her dedication to improving the education system in her district, Satpathy recently composed and performed an educational song that has struck a chord with thousands of schoolchildren. This isn’t just any ABC song—it’s a unique blend of music and life lessons, making the learning process not only fun but meaningful.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, she shared details on how she came about the song and its impact.

A NEW SPIN ON THE ABCS

The traditional ABC song has been a staple of early childhood education for generations, but Satpathy’s version stands out. Instead of the usual “A for Apple” and “B for Ball,” she chose to assign each letter of the alphabet a word that reflects positive qualities. The lyrics to the song go:

  • “A for Active,”
  • “B for Bright,”
  • “C for Creative,”
  • “D for Delight,”
  • “E for Ethical,”
  • “F for Fearless,”
    …and so on.

In her own words, Pamela explains, “When I visit schools, the students call me ‘teacher,’ and that is how I relate to them.” This personalized touch allows her to connect with students in a way that goes beyond just the delivery of lessons. It’s about shaping the character of the future generation, and she uses every opportunity to do so.

FROM PERSONAL INSPIRATION TO PUBLIC GIFT

The origins of this song are as humble as they are heartfelt. Satpathy wrote the lyrics when her son was born, hoping to teach him the ABCs in a meaningful way. However, the song found new life when it was rediscovered years later during her visits to government schools. “I never really thought much about it,” she admits. “But when a few teachers heard it, they thought it would be a great idea to turn it into a video.”

In collaboration with teachers from the Government Primary School in Garshakurthy village, the song was brought to life through a community-driven effort. The video features students performing actions that match the words they sing, making it a visual and interactive experience. It wasn’t just the children who loved it—parents and even grandparents were thrilled with the heartwarming video.

Satpathy humbly reveals, “It was a collective effort. The teachers and I worked together to make sure the children understood the meaning of the words and represented them in a fun way.”

SIMPLICITY WITH IMPACT

Despite its professional polish, the recording process was delightfully simple. “I recorded it on my phone. I played the karaoke track on one phone and recorded my singing on another. It was all very low-tech, but it turned out beautifully,” she told Indian Masterminds.

This DIY approach reflects Satpathy’s belief in the power of simplicity. The song itself is set to the lullaby tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” chosen specifically for its ease of adaptation by young children.

This unpretentious creation has had a significant impact. “The children loved it, their confidence increased, and they felt like stars in a music video,” Satpathy shares. Her personal joy is evident when she talks about how even visually impaired students have learned the song by heart, singing it with enthusiasm. The song, which is now being played in 734 schools across the district, has become a cherished educational tool.

MAKING EDUCATION FUN

Despite her demanding job as a District Collector, Satpathy makes time for her creative passions. “If you truly love something, you find time for it,” she says. “Even with a busy schedule, little moments—like lunch breaks or late nights—become opportunities.” The recording, for instance, took place at 1 AM after a long day.

For Satpathy, balancing her professional duties with her creative outlets is a source of energy, not stress. “Doing something I love rejuvenates me. It helps me approach my tasks with more enthusiasm.”

A GROWING CALL FOR MORE EDUCATIONAL SONGS

Since the release of the ABC song, Satpathy has received requests from retired teachers across India, urging her to compose more educational songs. “They want more rhymes and songs for children, and I’m considering it,” she shares. While she doesn’t know how to compose original music, she enjoys writing poems and stories, and she plans to explore more creative educational projects in the future.

For Satpathy, the journey of creativity began early. She developed a passion for literature and writing as a child, and during college, she even started a blog. “I’ve always loved writing,” she says, “but it was really during my college years when I started to explore it more seriously.” Today, the song serves as a beautiful intersection of her love for writing, her passion for teaching, and her creative spirit.

THE POWER OF EDUCATORS AND PARENTS IN SHAPING LEARNING

As an IAS officer, Satpathy has come to understand the importance of collaboration between educators, parents, and the community. “Educators and parents play a crucial role in creating an environment where learning feels exciting,” she says. “Making education interactive and creative is key to sparking curiosity in children.”

Satpathy believes that when education is engaging, it becomes an exciting journey rather than a chore.

THE IMPACT OF A SIMPLE SONG

What started as a personal project for her son has transformed into an educational movement that has reached thousands of students in Karimnagar. Satpathy’s ABC song isn’t just about teaching letters; it’s about instilling essential life skills and values in the next generation. Her innovative approach to education reminds us that learning doesn’t have to be rigid or boring—it can be fun, creative, and full of heart.
