Indian Masterminds Stories

Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand, is witnessing a wave of transformation under the leadership of IAS Savin Bansal. A 2009-batch officer of the Uttarakhand cadre, Bansal is currently serving as the District Magistrate of Dehradun. With a vision for development across sectors, he is taking bold steps to address the city’s challenges and create a more inclusive, functional, and forward-thinking environment.

WOMEN’S SAFETY: THE PINK POLICE BOOTHS

One of Bansal’s standout initiatives is the introduction of pink police booths—dedicated spaces aimed at ensuring women’s safety in the city. The pink police booths are now being set up in the district highlighting the effort to create secure zones for women in public spaces. This move has been widely appreciated for addressing safety concerns head-on.

MODERNIZING URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE

Dehradun’s urban landscape is set to change significantly with projects focusing on modern infrastructure. Addressing two pressing concerns—parking and sustainable transportation—Bansal has introduced automated mechanical parking systems and is rolling out EV charging stations across the city.

Dehradun lacks automated parking structures, so the officer is setting up facilities for that. Plans to install EV charging stations are also underway, with budgets already allocated, marking a step forward for eco-friendly commuting.

EMPOWERING EDUCATION

Children are at the heart of Bansal’s development blueprint. His Anti-Child Begging Project aims to rehabilitate and provide education to children who are often seen begging on the streets.

Simultaneously, schools across the district are being upgraded under his leadership. Classrooms are being equipped with new furniture, digital whiteboards, and screens, while sports activities are being made compulsory to promote holistic growth. He aims to make schools smarter and more engaging for students.

HEALTHCARE OVERHAUL

Bansal’s focus on healthcare is reshaping the accessibility and quality of medical services in Dehradun. Hospitals in the district are now mandated to have essential facilities like labs, blood banks, and child care units.

The officer and his team have ensured that major hospitals upgrade their infrastructure, and the funding for these improvements has already been secured. This initiative ensures that even the most vulnerable have access to critical healthcare services.

HANDS-ON GOVERNANCE

What sets Bansal apart is his direct involvement in addressing public grievances. Whether it’s standing in line at a government hospital in Rishikesh to assess its functioning or inspecting liquor shops in disguise to curb overcharging, Bansal’s approach is rooted in ground-level action.

In one instance, he drove himself to a liquor shop, purchased alcohol like an ordinary customer, and uncovered overpricing, leading to swift action against the offenders.

SOCIAL MEDIA BUZZ AND PUBLIC SUPPORT

Bansal’s initiatives have sparked widespread discussion on social media. Videos of his surprise inspections, such as the one at a Rishikesh hospital, have gone viral, earning him praise for his no-nonsense attitude. The public has lauded his efforts to tackle systemic inefficiencies with decisive action.

A JOURNEY OF EXCELLENCE

Hailing from Haryana, Bansal cleared the UPSC examination in 2008, securing an impressive All India Rank of 34. He holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Kurukshetra and a postgraduate degree in Risk and Disaster Management from the University of London.

In 2021, he was the only IAS officer from India selected for the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue further studies in the United Kingdom.

FAMILY VALUES AND SIMPLICITY

Bansal’s grounded approach extends to his personal life. His wife, Surbhi Bansal, is equally admired for her simplicity. In 2019, she made headlines when she visited a government hospital in Nainital, standing in line like any other patient to get her child checked. This episode resonated with many, reflecting the family’s commitment to humility.

A VISION FOR TRANSPARENT GOVERNANCE

Beyond his specific projects, Bansal is committed to establishing transparent governance and effective administrative control. Under his leadership, Dehradun is steadily moving towards a future defined by modern infrastructure, social welfare, and accountability.

Savin Bansal’s hands-on leadership and innovative projects are reshaping Dehradun, bringing hope for a city that balances progress with compassion. His ability to connect with people and address their concerns directly has made him a household name in Uttarakhand and beyond.
