Kathakar Ki Diary, the debut feature film by IRS officer Anwesh of the 2013 batch, is a profound exploration of identity, resilience, and societal expectations. Set against the vivid and diverse backdrop of contemporary India, the film delves into the lives of five distinct characters: a child, a cancer-stricken photographer, a musician, a transwoman, and an athlete working in tribal areas. In an exclusive video interview with Indian Masterminds, Mr. Anwesh shared details about the movies, music, characters, challenges, and much more.

Through its non-linear narrative, Kathakar Ki Diary artfully weaves together their stories, shedding light on lives that often remain on the margins of society. Driven by a personal commitment to storytelling, the officer embarked on this ambitious project to amplify unheard voices. “I wanted to highlight the lives of people whose stories are seldom told,” he explains. The film’s deeply human narrative reflects his fascination with social dynamics and raw emotions, inviting viewers to witness struggles and triumphs that resonate universally.
The journey of creating Kathakar Ki Diary was as compelling as the film itself. Shot across diverse locations in India—Mumbai, Pune, Odisha, and Meghalaya—between 2022 and 2023, the production faced numerous challenges.
Music, an integral narrative element, elevates the storytelling. Mr. Anwesh, leveraging his background in performing arts, curated a score that blends traditional Indian instruments with modern compositions.
Described by Anwesh as “a film of the people, by the people, for the people,” Kathakar Ki Diary transcends conventional cinema. It is an experimental piece that intricately captures the complexities of Indian life while celebrating the indomitable spirit of its characters.
