New Delhi / Lucknow: In a significant step toward cadre strengthening and career advancement, the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) has approved the promotion of 21 officers from the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Police Service (PPS) to the prestigious Indian Police Service (IPS).
The decision was finalized during a DPC meeting held at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), where detailed assessments were made of eligible officers from the 1996, 1997, and 1998 batches.
Selection Finalized After Extensive Review
Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the DPC, after a thorough evaluation of service records, integrity, and seniority lists, arrived at a consensus on the promotion of 21 officers. These officers will now be inducted into the IPS cadre of Uttar Pradesh.
This move comes as part of a broader strategy to address officer shortages in the IPS and boost administrative efficiency at various levels of law enforcement.
Four Officers Not Considered
While 21 officers received approval, four senior officers — Shailendra Kumar Srivastava, Virendra Kumar, Suresh Chandra Rawat, and Kamal Kishore — were not considered during the meeting. Sources indicate that the exclusion could be related to pending clearances, service record issues, or procedural formalities. However, no official reason has yet been disclosed.
Awaiting Official Notification
The promotions are expected to be formally notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after completing procedural approvals. Once notified, the promoted officers will be inducted into the IPS and may be reassigned to new postings in alignment with cadre requirements.
This development is likely to bring fresh leadership at the district and zonal levels, with increased accountability, professionalism, and command within the UP Police framework.
Significance of PPS-to-IPS Promotions
The promotion of state police officers to IPS is a routine yet crucial process that ensures experienced officers from the state services bring their on-ground knowledge to the national policing framework. It also motivates mid-level officers by offering them a clear career trajectory toward leadership roles.
