New Delhi: In a significant move to fill judicial vacancies across the country, the Central Government on Monday notified the appointment of several advocates as judges in various High Courts, following recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium and with the approval of the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
Three advocates – Deepak Khot, Amit Seth, and Pavan Kumar Dwivedi – have been appointed as judges of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This brings much-needed reinforcement to the court, which was functioning with 33 judges against a sanctioned strength of 53 as of May 1, leaving 20 vacancies.
The appointment of Amit Seth was earlier recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on October 17, 2023, citing his strong legal practice, good personal and professional image, and reputation for integrity. The same day, the Collegium had deferred decisions on Khot and Dwivedi, seeking further input from the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Their appointments were later cleared in a resolution dated January 9, 2024, after reviewing the additional material.
In addition to the Madhya Pradesh appointments, the government also appointed four Additional Judges across other High Courts:
- Rohit Kapoor – Punjab and Haryana High Court
- Subhash Upadhyay – Uttarakhand High Court
- Smt. Shamima Jahan – Gauhati High Court
- Sachin Shivajirao Deshmukh – Bombay High Court
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the developments on X (formerly Twitter), noting the government’s continued efforts to strengthen the judiciary and expedite the dispensation of justice.
