With fast-paced urban growth and the ambition to host the 2036 Olympics, Ahmedabad is set to revive its long-stalled third ring road project, first proposed nearly two decades ago. The Gujarat state government has now given in-principle approval to accelerate this massive infrastructure plan, making it a central component of the upcoming draft development plan.

Over 100 TP Schemes to Ease Land Acquisition
To avoid delays caused by conventional revenue rule-based development—which often results in legal disputes—the government will employ over 100 town planning (TP) schemes for structured land acquisition. This approach, officials say, ensures speedier and more organized urban expansion along the corridor.
A senior official said, “Given the increasing traffic burden on the existing 132-feet Ring Road and Sardar Patel Ring Road, the third ring road has now become essential. The government is prioritising it, especially considering Ahmedabad’s aspiration to host the Olympics.”
One of Gujarat’s Largest Urban Projects
Initially part of the draft development plan 19 years ago, the project had seen no progress in terms of groundwork or land procurement—until now. The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and the Urban Development Department (UDD) are now jointly working to fast-track the initiative.
The proposed third ring road is likely to be one of Gujarat’s largest town-planning initiatives. Experts involved in the process have mostly agreed to the original alignment, with room for minor refinements if required.
Timeline and Future Action
The state government aims to finalise the new draft development plan by the end of 2025, with the third ring road and an associated land acquisition strategy included. Sources confirmed that a comprehensive action plan for the project will be ready within this period.
This push reflects the state’s broader strategy to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and prepare Ahmedabad for the global stage, aligning urban development with Olympic-level aspirations.
