Patna: In a surprising administrative twist, former Bihar DGP and 1989-batch IPS officer Alok Raj has resigned from his post as Chairman of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) just two to three days after taking charge. The resignation, submitted to the General Administration Department, has triggered speculation and raised questions about the commission’s future functioning.
Alok Raj Appointed BSSC Chairman Immediately After Retirement
The Nitish Kumar government had appointed Alok Raj as permanent Chairman of BSSC on January 1, 2026, immediately after his retirement from the Bihar Police Service on December 31, 2025.
Alok Raj had previously been serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Bihar until December 2024. Following his removal from the DGP post, he was temporarily given additional charge of BSSC Chairman until the end of his police service.
On assuming office as the BSSC Chairman on January 4, 2026, he was expected to hold the position for a standard tenure of five years, but he submitted his resignation almost immediately, citing personal reasons.
Speculations Surround Sudden Resignation
While Alok Raj has stated personal reasons for stepping down, his abrupt departure has triggered widespread speculation in political and administrative circles. Known as a strict and disciplined administrator, Alok Raj’s tenure at BSSC was expected to improve the conduct of examinations and the transparency of selection processes.
Observers note that his resignation comes at a critical time, with several competitive examinations pending and results yet to be announced. The decision has left the state government with the urgent task of appointing a new chairman to maintain stability in the commission’s operations.
BPSC TRE 3 Paper Leak Investigation Continues
The resignation coincides with ongoing investigations by the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) into irregularities in recruitment examinations in Bihar.
In the BPSC TRE 3 paper leak case, another active member of the notorious Sanjeev Mukhiya gang, identified as Bipul Kumar alias Bipul Sharma, has been arrested.
Investigations reveal Bipul’s links to the Haryana STET paper leak as well, indicating an interstate syndicate.
A total of 289 accused have been arrested so far, with Bipul Kumar undergoing interrogation, expected to reveal further connections and accomplices.
The ongoing probe has highlighted the systemic challenges in Bihar’s recruitment and examination processes, increasing the pressure on BSSC leadership.
Implications for BSSC and Bihar Administration
Alok Raj’s resignation raises immediate concerns:
- Vacant Chairmanship: The commission’s key leadership post is now unfilled, potentially affecting upcoming examinations.
- Administrative Uncertainty: With BSSC responsible for thousands of recruitment processes, a sudden leadership change can disrupt schedules and planning.
- Government Response: The Bihar government will now need to quickly identify a suitable replacement to ensure the commission’s work continues without disruption.
