Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that professionals from the United States will assist in conducting well-capping work at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) Rudrasagar Field in Sivasagar district, to avoid a possible potential crisis in the oilfield.

CM Sarma’s announcement comes as ONGC faces problems at RDS#147A well and there are also international technical assistance and remedial action needed due to specific well-control intervention. The Chief Minister assured that all aspects have been accounted for in terms of safe guarding the lives and properties of the people who live near the site.

“We have made sure we are prepared for the situation. We are bringing in international experts to deal with the situation as safe and as expeditiously as possible,” CM Sarma told the media.

High-Pressure Safety Ops Underway

ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited) has begun high-pressure water pumping, as well as site leveling and protective shielding of nearby wells as a precautionary measure. The corporation is preparing the next steps of well control, with help from expert international support, and monitoring the situation continuously.

The fact that they brought in international technical staf is indication of the seriousness and complexity of the situation, as well as that ONGC is willing to embrace international standards of safety.

Collaboration for Crisis Containment

The involvement of US experts represents an important example of Indo-US technical collaboration in the energy space. Cross-border cooperation is essential not only to successfully address this episode but promotes India’s commitment to delivering energy security while enhancing environmental security.

ONGC officials have adhered to protocols at this site and expect to provide updates as operations continue.

Public Safety Assurance

The Assam government has emphasized that safety protocols are in place, and evacuation plans are ready, though no displacements have been ordered yet. Local administration teams are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with ONGC’s emergency response units.

Background

Rudrasagar Field is one of ONGC’s major onshore assets in the Northeast. Any disruption or safety lapse here could have both environmental and operational implications, making the swift and expert response a top priority for state and central agencies.
