Dibrugarh: In a major step towards India’s clean energy and green shipping transition, Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd (APL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) to establish a 150 tonnes per day (TPD) e-Methanol plant at Kandla Port in Gujarat.
The MoU marks a significant move to strengthen India’s green marine fuel ecosystem and support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
MoU Signed in Presence of National and State Leadership
The signing ceremony was held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Dibrugarh, Assam, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, along with senior officials from both organisations.
Integrated Green Fuel Value Chain at Kandla Port
Under the agreement, the Deendayal Port Authority will provide pipeline connectivity, storage facilities and fuel handling infrastructure at the port. Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd will establish the green e-methanol production facility within the port premises, enabling an integrated and efficient value chain for green marine fuels.
Boost to Green Shipping and Maritime Trade
Once commissioned, the e-methanol plant is expected to position Kandla Port as a key green fuel supply hub along major international shipping routes, including vessels operating on the Singapore–Rotterdam corridor.
The availability of green marine fuels at the port is likely to attract more deep-sea vessels, increase cargo movement, and support trade growth across the hinterland and the country, while aligning with global decarbonisation norms for shipping.
APL’s Move Towards Green and e-Methanol Production
Based in Assam, Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd operates one of India’s largest methanol plants at Namrup and has recently expanded its production capacity. The partnership with Deendayal Port Authority enables APL to move up the value chain from conventional methanol to green and e-methanol production, strengthening its role in India’s clean energy transition.
