New Delhi: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has successfully completed the First-off Production Model (FOPM) of the Advanced Akash Weapon System, marking a major step forward in India’s indigenous air defence manufacturing programme.
The company disclosed the development in a regulatory filing on Thursday, stating that the upgraded weapon system incorporates several advanced sub-systems designed to improve operational efficiency and enhance combat readiness for the Indian Armed Forces.
Advanced Sub-Systems Added to Improve Operational Performance
According to BDL, the latest version of the Akash system includes upgraded technologies aimed at strengthening target engagement capability and response efficiency in modern combat conditions.
The company said these advanced sub-systems are intended to improve:
- precision target interception
- response speed against aerial threats
- operational flexibility in multiple combat scenarios
- overall battlefield readiness
The upgraded platform represents a further evolution of India’s indigenous missile-based air defence architecture.
High Precision Demonstrated Against Aerial Threats
BDL stated that the Advanced Akash Weapon System demonstrated high precision while engaging different categories of aerial threats, reaffirming its ability to handle complex defence requirements.
The successful performance of the system is being seen as validation of the company’s capability to deliver technologically advanced missile systems developed within India.
Deliveries to Armed Forces Expected Soon
The successful completion of the First-off Production Model is expected to clear the way for formal deliveries of the Advanced Akash Weapon System to the armed forces in the near future.
This stage is considered crucial because the FOPM serves as the production-standard benchmark before serial deliveries begin under defence contracts.
Boost to India’s Indigenous Defence Manufacturing Push
The development aligns with the Government of India’s continued emphasis on defence self-reliance under the broader indigenous manufacturing push.
Bharat Dynamics Limited has been one of the key public sector defence manufacturers involved in missile production, strategic weapons integration and delivery systems for the armed forces.
Strategic Importance of the Advanced Akash System
The Advanced Akash Weapon System is expected to further strengthen India’s layered air defence preparedness by improving interception capability against hostile airborne threats.
Its induction will add to India’s domestically built defence inventory and reduce dependence on imported systems.
