New Delhi: In a strategic move to strengthen India’s indigenous space capabilities, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bellatrix Aerospace to collaborate on the design, development, and manufacturing of satellite systems and payloads, with a special focus on Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) missions.
The partnership combines BEL’s decades-long expertise in defence electronics and mission-critical payloads with Bellatrix Aerospace’s capabilities in satellite propulsion and subsystems, aiming to create integrated satellite platforms capable of meeting the demands of both strategic and civilian applications.
Focus on Indigenous Satellite Systems for VLEO
The collaboration seeks to enhance India’s self-reliance in space technology by developing next-generation satellites designed specifically for operations in the VLEO regime. These satellites are expected to support a wide range of applications, including earth observation, communication, and scientific missions, while also leveraging advanced propulsion and payload technologies.
BEL highlighted that combining its expertise in mission-critical electronics with Bellatrix Aerospace’s deep-tech startup innovations will accelerate technological advancements and strengthen India’s position in the rapidly evolving global space sector.
Strengthening Strategic and Civil Space Capabilities
An official statement from BEL emphasized that this partnership will support both strategic and civilian satellite programs, providing end-to-end integrated satellite solutions. The collaboration will also focus on emerging requirements in the space domain, including rapid satellite deployment, enhanced satellite reliability, and innovative payload development.
This MoU reflects a growing trend of industry-government collaboration in India’s space ecosystem, promoting innovation through partnerships between established public sector units and agile private startups.
MoU Exchange Ceremony
The MoU was formally exchanged between Rashmi Kathuria, General Manager (SCCS) and Unit Head of BEL-Ghaziabad, and Rohan M. Ganapathy, CEO and CTO of Bellatrix Aerospace.
