New Delhi: State-run defence and heavy engineering company BEML Limited is likely to be elevated from Miniratna to Navratna status, with the Finance Ministry actively considering the proposal. According to sources, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) may make a formal announcement soon.
Navratna Status on the Horizon
BEML, which has been operating under the Miniratna category, has reportedly met all required eligibility conditions for the upgrade. The move is expected to provide the company with greater autonomy in financial and operational matters.
Sources confirmed that the proposal has gained traction within the Finance Ministry, and the DPE is preparing the groundwork for an official notification.
Enhanced Autonomy for BEML
With Navratna status, BEML’s board will gain enhanced decision-making powers. The company will no longer need prior government approval for investments up to ₹1,000 crore, allowing greater flexibility in expanding operations and pursuing strategic initiatives.
This additional autonomy is seen as a major boost for BEML, strengthening its role in the defence and heavy engineering sector while enabling faster execution of projects.
Government’s Broader Review of Ratna Categories
Alongside BEML’s upgrade, the government is also reviewing the broader framework of Ratna classifications. Officials are considering the inclusion of additional performance-linked conditions to ensure accountability among Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
Under the proposed changes, companies that fail to meet financial or operational benchmarks may face a downgrade in their category status. This review aims to make the Ratna system more dynamic and performance-driven.
