Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mr. Yogi Adityanath visited the renowned ‘Carpet City’ Bhadohi on Monday to review the progress of various ongoing development projects and assess the status of the carpet industry, which plays a vital role in the state’s export economy.
Bhadohi Contributes Over 60% to UP’s Carpet Exports
While addressing the media during his visit, Mr. Adityanath highlighted Bhadohi’s massive contribution to the national carpet export sector. “Bhadohi alone contributes more than 60% to Uttar Pradesh’s carpet exports. The industry, which was struggling a decade ago, has been revived with new energy and support under the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he stated.
The Chief Minister emphasised that Bhadohi’s carpets have received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, lending global recognition to this centuries-old craft. “This GI tag has helped boost international demand, and we are committed to further strengthening this traditional Indian handicraft through infrastructure and policy support,” he added.
Driving Growth Through MSMEs and Global Markets
Taking to social media platform X, Mr. Adityanath wrote:
“The world-famous ‘Carpet City’ Bhadohi with a GI tag is today setting new dimensions in traditional weaving, MSME entrepreneurship and global exports. Today I will review the progress of ongoing development projects in the district. The double engine government is determined to make Bhadohi self-reliant and a leader in global competition.”
A Legacy of Excellence in Carpet Weaving
According to the Bhadohi district administration, this region is the largest carpet manufacturing centre in India, especially known for hand-woven carpets. The Mirzapur-Bhadohi belt employs around 32 lakh people, including 22 lakh rural artisans in Bhadohi alone. The art of carpet weaving in the region traces its origins to the 16th century, during the reign of Emperor Akbar.
The GI tag for Bhadohi carpets covers nine districts: Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Sonbhadra, Kaushambi, Allahabad, Jaunpur, and Chandauli. Renowned carpet varieties produced in the region include Cotton Spindle, Chhapra Mir Carpet, Loribafft, and Indo Gabbeh.
CM Yogi’s visit underscores the state government’s commitment to empowering local artisans, strengthening the MSME ecosystem, and promoting Bhadohi’s traditional crafts in the global marketplace.
