New Delhi: In a major infrastructural boost for Eastern India, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line, spanning 177 km across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The project, estimated to cost ₹3,169 crore, aims to enhance freight capacity, decongest busy rail routes, and improve access to major religious and economic centers.
Key Project Highlights
- Route: Bhagalpur (Bihar) – Dumka (Jharkhand) – Rampurhat (West Bengal)
- Length: 177 km
- Estimated Cost: ₹3,169 crore
- States Covered: Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal
- Districts Benefiting: Banka, Godda, Dumka, Bhagalpur, and Birbhum
- Villages Impacted: Approx. 441
- People Benefiting: Over 28.72 lakh residents
Boost to Mobility, Freight & Employment
The doubling of this important single-line rail corridor will significantly improve railway mobility, operational efficiency, and service reliability. The route currently handles both passenger and freight traffic but faces bottlenecks due to capacity constraints. Once doubled, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to handle 15 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight including coal, cement, fertilizers, bricks, and stones.
This development aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by creating new employment and self-employment opportunities in the region.
Improved Access to Tourist and Religious Sites
The line will offer improved rail connectivity to important pilgrimage and tourism destinations like:
- Deoghar (Baba Baidyanath Dham) – one of the 12 Jyotirlingas
- Tarapith (Shakti Peeth) – a revered temple in West Bengal
This is expected to promote religious tourism, boosting the local economy and small businesses.
Environmental Benefits: Green Push Through Rail
The Indian Railways’ commitment to eco-friendly transport gets a further push with this project. It is estimated to:
- Reduce oil imports by 5 crore litres annually
- Cut CO₂ emissions by 24 crore kg, equivalent to planting 1 crore trees
This makes the project not just economically significant but also environmentally sustainable.
Additional Cabinet Approval: ₹4,447 Crore Highway Project in Bihar
In a related move to bolster connectivity in Bihar, the Cabinet also approved the construction of a 4-lane greenfield highway in the Mokama–Munger section of the Buxar–Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).
- Project Length: 82.4 km
- Estimated Cost: ₹4,447.38 crore
- Purpose: Improve access-controlled road connectivity in central Bihar, reduce travel time, and support freight movement
Expert View
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while addressing the media, emphasized the government’s focus on enhancing regional integration and building multi-modal infrastructure that supports both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Conclusion
The dual approvals for the railway doubling project and the greenfield highway mark a strong push by the Centre towards improving infrastructure in eastern India, especially in regions that are still developing economically. With improved freight handling, passenger mobility, religious tourism, and employment potential, these projects aim to transform the socio-economic landscape of Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
