Cape Town, South Africa: Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Mr. Bhupender Yadav represented India at the G20 Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in Cape Town, South Africa, on October 16, 2025. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Yadav extended gratitude to the Republic of South Africa for its leadership in advancing the meeting’s theme of “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.” He called upon all delegates to unite in purpose, emphasizing equality in rights and resources alongside a collective commitment to protecting the planet.
Celebrating a Decade of the Paris Agreement
In his speech, Mr. Yadav expressed satisfaction that ten years since the Paris Agreement, countries worldwide have not only committed to their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) but, in many cases, including India, have begun to achieve their climate goals ahead of schedule. This milestone underlines the global efforts to combat climate change and move towards a sustainable future.
Bridging Ambition and Implementation at the G20
Mr. Yadav reaffirmed India’s role as a proactive contributor to global environmental solutions. He urged the G20 nations to serve as a bridge between ambitious climate commitments and their practical implementation. Emphasizing the principles of “Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities” (CBDR-RC), he stressed the need to honor financial commitments to developing countries as a critical duty rather than a mere promise. “Equality is not a privilege—it is a right,” he asserted, underscoring the importance of equitable support for nations facing environmental challenges.
Integrating Traditional Wisdom with Futuristic Technologies
Reflecting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the previous G20 Summit, Mr. Yadav highlighted the importance of “going back to the basics” while simultaneously embracing future-oriented solutions. He emphasized that ecosystem-based approaches combined with cutting-edge technologies must work together to forge a sustainable path forward. “Knowledge sharing, capacity building, technology co-development, and transfer will play a significant role in attaining sustainability,” the Minister said.
Advocating a Whole-of-Society Approach and Pro-Planet Lifestyles
Mr. Yadav advocated for a holistic approach involving all sectors of society to achieve tangible environmental outcomes. He stressed the importance of individuals adopting “pro-planet lifestyle choices” as a key element in driving meaningful change. This inclusive perspective aligns with the South African Presidency’s people-centric, integrated, and collaborative strategy, which Mr. Yadav expressed full support for during his address.
India’s Continued Commitment to Global Environmental Leadership
Through his participation in the G20 Environment Ministers’ Meeting, Mr. Bhupender Yadav reaffirmed India’s dedication to sustainability, climate action, and international cooperation. His message underscored the need for solidarity among nations to ensure a greener, more equitable future for all.
