Gandhinagar: In a significant step following the recent India–UK trade agreement, a high-level delegation from the West Midlands Combined Authority visited Gujarat for the first time and held strategic talks with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
The delegation, led by West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, discussed expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors including higher education, green economy, electric vehicles (EVs), artificial intelligence (AI), skills development, and advanced manufacturing.
Expanding India-UK Strategic Economic Cooperation
During the meeting, both sides explored new partnership opportunities aligned with emerging global economic trends. Discussions focused on:
- Green economy and clean energy transition
- Electric vehicle manufacturing and ecosystem development
- Artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing
- Higher education collaborations and university-led innovation
- Skills development and workforce training
The UK delegation expressed interest in leveraging British expertise in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and university-driven innovation ecosystems to support Gujarat’s industrial growth.
Focus on Commonwealth Games 2030 Preparations
A key highlight of the discussions was collaboration in sports infrastructure development ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which Gujarat is preparing to host.
Both sides explored cooperation in building world-class sports infrastructure and strengthening the broader sports ecosystem. Mayor Richard Parker invited Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and a senior Gujarat delegation to visit the West Midlands to exchange insights related to Commonwealth Games preparations.
Gujarat’s Growth Vision and Global Investment Push
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has emerged as a trusted global partner. He highlighted the success of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit initiative launched in 2003, which has significantly boosted investment inflows into the state.
Patel emphasized that through sector-focused policies and continuous reforms, Gujarat has positioned itself as a leading global investment destination. Referring to the vision of “Developed India 2047,” he said Gujarat is ready to take a leadership role in future-oriented sectors, particularly green growth and emerging technologies.
Proposal for Joint Working Group
To strengthen coordination and accelerate collaboration, the Chief Minister proposed the formation of a joint working group comprising officials from Gujarat and the West Midlands. He suggested designating the Industrial Extension Bureau as the nodal agency to facilitate structured engagement.
The UK delegation was also invited to participate in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference and the Vibrant Summit 2027.
Key Stakeholders Present
Senior representatives from the West Midlands Growth Company, E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions, Warwick University Innovation District, the University of Birmingham, GEDU, Aston University, and the UK-India International Forum attended the meeting.
From the Gujarat government, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Mamta Verma and Industries Commissioner P. Swarup were among the senior officials present.
Strengthening Gujarat–UK Bilateral Ties
The visit marks a new chapter in Gujarat–UK relations, signaling deeper cooperation in innovation, sustainability, advanced manufacturing, and global sporting infrastructure. With structured engagement and sectoral collaboration, both regions aim to unlock long-term economic and technological benefits.
