Patna: In a significant step towards wildlife conservation in Bihar, the state government has approved the proposal to upgrade the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary into the “Kaimur Tiger Reserve.” The revised proposal, prepared in line with the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), Government of India, has received formal approval from Hon’ble Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Pramod Kumar, before being sent to the central government for final clearance.
Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary: Bihar’s Largest Biodiverse Region
The Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the Kaimur mountain range, is the largest forest area in Bihar and is rich in biodiversity. It provides a natural habitat conducive for tiger populations and is home to several other wildlife species. Recognizing its ecological significance, the state government had earlier prepared a proposal to declare it as a tiger reserve.
Revised Proposal Approved by State Government
The revised proposal incorporates essential modifications as per NTCA guidelines. Minister Dr. Pramod Kumar, while approving the proposal, highlighted its utility in strengthening wildlife conservation, particularly for tigers, and emphasized the ecological importance of safeguarding the sanctuary’s flora and fauna. He noted that in recent years, evidence of tiger presence, including vocalizations, has been recorded in the sanctuary, underscoring the suitability of the area for tiger conservation.
Socio-Economic and Environmental Benefits
The designation of Kaimur as a tiger reserve is expected to bring multiple benefits beyond wildlife protection:
- Enhanced employment opportunities for local communities through eco-tourism and forest-based activities.
- Promotion of eco-tourism, drawing visitors to experience the region’s rich biodiversity.
- Sustainable regional development while conserving the ecological balance.
- Strengthening the habitat for tigers, ensuring a healthy predator-prey ecosystem.
Minister Dr. Pramod Kumar stated, “Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary is extremely rich in biodiversity and provides a suitable natural habitat for tigers. Declaring it as a tiger reserve will not only enhance tiger conservation but also safeguard the entire ecological system of the region.”
Next Steps for Tiger Reserve Status
Following state approval, the revised proposal will now be sent to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), New Delhi. Upon receiving NTCA clearance, Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary will be formally declared as a tiger reserve, marking a major milestone in Bihar’s wildlife conservation efforts.
The move reflects Bihar’s commitment to preserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring the protection of endangered species while fostering eco-tourism and local livelihoods.
