Patna: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna has successfully conducted Bihar’s first robotic surgery for pancreatic cancer. The procedure was performed by a team of six doctors from the GI Surgery department, led by Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh, marking a historic moment in advanced cancer treatment within the state.
Robotic Surgery Revolutionizes Pancreatic Cancer Treatment
The patient, a 71-year-old male from Wazidpur in Darbhanga, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after undergoing routine blood tests and a CT scan at IGIMS. Traditionally, pancreatic cancer surgery in India requires open surgery or laparoscopic procedures, both of which involve long operation times, high risk of blood loss, and ICU stays with ventilator support.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh explained, “Robotic surgery reduces both operation time and post-surgery complications. The procedure at IGIMS was completed in six hours, and the patient spent only one night in the ICU before being shifted to the general ward in stable condition.”
Significantly, the surgery cost just ₹50,000—half the price of traditional laparoscopic procedures in most Indian hospitals, making this a more affordable treatment option for Bihar residents.

Eliminating the Need to Travel for Advanced Surgery
Dr. Binde Kumar, Director of IGIMS, highlighted that the institute will now offer complex robotic surgeries across various departments, ensuring patients in Bihar no longer need to travel to other states for high-end procedures. “Our aim is to provide world-class treatment at a fraction of the cost while keeping patients close to home,” he added.
The successful surgery was carried out under the supervision of Medical Superintendent Dr. Manish Mandal, with active participation from surgical and support staff, including Dr. Netra Nand, Dr. Vinod Kumar Verma, Dr. Vibha, Dr. Anantu, and the OT team led by Sister In-Charge Shailja and Sister Sushila. The collaborative effort was recognized as a milestone for IGIMS and the state’s healthcare system.
A Leap Forward for Healthcare in Bihar
This achievement positions Bihar among the few states in India to perform advanced robotic cancer surgeries locally, offering both cost-effective treatment and high medical standards. Patients requiring complex surgeries for pancreatic cancer and other conditions can now access advanced care without leaving the state, reducing travel burdens and financial stress.
IGIMS plans to expand robotic surgery programs further, strengthening Bihar’s position as a hub for advanced medical treatments in Eastern India.
