Patna: Following the conclusion of the state assembly elections, the Bihar government has fast-tracked its road and bridge construction projects. Among the key initiatives gaining momentum is the ambitious Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway, a six-lane corridor that will pass through eight districts in Bihar, significantly enhancing connectivity with Uttar Pradesh.
Land Acquisition Begins in East Champaran
The expressway will commence from Paharpur in East Champaran, where land acquisition has already begun. Approximately 491.12 hectares of land will be acquired across nearly 56 villages in the district. After East Champaran, the expressway will pass through Shivhar district, connecting strategically to neighboring Uttar Pradesh and making inter-state travel much smoother.
Designed as a greenfield expressway, the project will avoid densely populated areas, minimizing potential challenges during land acquisition and ensuring faster construction.
Boosting Local Development and Employment
Officials say that the expressway will not only cut travel time between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar but will also spur development in all the regions it passes through. The project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities for local communities and improve the economic landscape of the surrounding areas.
Corridor Overview and Estimated Cost
The Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway will traverse eight districts of Bihar: West Champaran, East Champaran, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj. Once completed, the travel distance between Gorakhpur and Siliguri is expected to reduce to less than 600 kilometers.
The total cost of this massive infrastructure project is estimated to be around ₹32,000 crore, reflecting its scale and strategic importance for the region.
Strategic Importance
Officials highlight that the expressway will strengthen regional connectivity, encourage industrial growth, and provide faster, safer travel options for passengers and commercial transport alike. The project underscores the Bihar government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and economic development in the post-election period.
